Ever tried giving up shampoo???

I put this in Style but thought I should probably post here too..

Since dd was born 15 weeks ago I suppose you could say I've gone a bit fallow. So yesterday I was sitting on the sofa in my own mung so to speak, with dd, and realised I hadn't washed my hair for a week.

It looked like it too!

But then I thought, well I'm probably not too far from the tipping point where my hair will start self-cleaning.

I looked it up on the infoweb and apparently there's a Mexican technique whereby you just rinse your hair with water, nothing else, and when it's wet you brush it 100 times each side with a flannel. This distributes the hair's natural oil away from the root and down the length IYSWIM.

So I'm going to give it a go. I may as well, I'm not exactly dressing up much at the moment. And my showers will be quicker which is a useful thing ATM. Hopefully I won't smell so bad that dd and dh won't want to come near.

Anyone else tried going without shampoo / conditioner?

surely washing it in the shower would be quicker than brushing it 100 times each side with a flannel?

rosealbie · 28/06/2007 13:07

not me but a friend of mine did a few years ago. I can't remember how long it took though but don't think she did anything other than just not wash it. It went through quite a minging stage but then was clean, didn't smell and was very soft.

GogoTheSmall · 28/06/2007 13:11

Sorry, I meant that you wash it in the shower and then brush it with a flannel.

I've just bought some headscarves off eBay! It's not too bad ATM though while it's tied back. My hair is quite high-maintenance normally as it's long and curly. I'm just too lazy really, but I hear there are some nasties in shampoo anyway?

How is it going gogo, have you succumbed to shampoo yet?

FrannyandZooey · 05/07/2007 18:35

I tried, but it didn't work

I only wash mine about every 5 days anyway, I have a very dry scalp and it doesn't get so greasy if you don't strip all the grease OUT by washing it every day, etc

I am still intrigued by the not shampooing thing, and hadn't heard about the flannel thing

let us know how you get on

GogoTheSmall · 06/07/2007 18:14

Still going... [smelly wafting nose emoticon]

Still haven't reached the tipping point either!

But it's not actually too bad if I wear it up. It looks quite sheeny near the roots, not greasy like I thought it would. But it is just so lank though, if I take it out of the hairband it just hangs. Have taken to spraying it with essential oils, seems to work!

My long suffering dh thinks it's very funny.

Had a BF who did not wash his hair and I am not entirely sure it self-cleaned either...eugh

bohemianbint · 06/07/2007 18:22

I went nearly 2 years without! Had dreads at the time though, but I remember at the beginning hair did magically sort itself out after about 2 weeks or so of being just washed with water. And it didn't smell either...Or so I'm told...

Bibis · 06/07/2007 18:29

I did it for about 3 months and the relief when I finally washed, all of a sudden it looked and felt fresh.

It didn't 'smell' dirty during the time but it was itchy and didn't look great. I did rinse it about once a week so maybe that is where I went wrong.

I only wash my hair once a week, which is plenty and i have very healthy looking and feeling hair (not much of a style though)

Good Luck

I tried not using shampoo earlier this year...mainly coz I ran out & was too poor to get any more ....went ok...but couldn't hack the amount of gunk that kept coming off it & having to brush it soooo much every morning & night to try to get it all out....so caved & bought some shampoo. Might try it again when Ive saved up enough to have my hair cut shorter. It's a real pain & really tangly if it's too long.

cornsilk · 07/07/2007 00:26

My ds has been getting away with hardly any shampoo for some time. His hair doesn't look that bad, but on closer inspection it's full of dust and all sorts of gross stuff.

I am using a wooden comb just now, I haven't given up shampoo yet, but use it very sparingly every other day, the wooden comb, supposedly helps with the oil being evenly redistributed...

we have been conditioined into thinking we need soap to be "clean"... I am interested... I have usd organic cider vinegar as a rinse in my hair, which leaves it feeling very soft and just lovely....

expatinscotland · 07/07/2007 00:40

No, not this old chesnut again!

expatinscotland · 07/07/2007 00:40

Soap is your friend. People used to get lots of nasty diseases that are rare in this country now because of better hygiene.

Aefondkiss · 07/07/2007 00:46

keeping your hands clean is important, yes but do we all need to be dowsing orselves in shower gel every day?

suedonim · 07/07/2007 01:47

I was told by an old Africa-hand that basic soap (the green stuff in bars you youngsters will probably never have seen!) is adequate for all our cleaning needs. It can be used for washing bodies, hair, clothes and dishes, cutting out all those lotions and potions.

And you can use the water left over at the end to make a cup of tea......just joking about that bit!!

expatinscotland · 07/07/2007 20:39

Shampoo smells nice.

Dirty hair doesn't.

vixma · 07/07/2007 20:50

doe's it depend on your hair type. My hair is very thick since the birth of my son ( very fine before) and it is agony to comb my hair through without conditioner, shampoo however is questionable.

mozzybear · 09/07/2007 20:20

I took to using Lush's solid soap, at least it doesn't have preservatives in it.

A compromise surely?
