Fir tree chopping

Do fir trees grow back once they're chopped for our pleasure at Christmas ?
Saw a Facebook page advertising fir trees and the picture showed the vast amount of trees chopped down and netted and for some reason it upset me , it struck a chord with me , it made me think: if that were cat or dog carcasses for sale imagine the uproar - I understand that trees are not conscious so I'm confused as to why the sight of so many cut-down netted firs has upset and angered me .

No they do not. Once chopped, that is it.

GladAllOver · 25/11/2018 16:55

No, that's it.
Even if you just prune one growing in the garden, it won't regain its shape.

Our family has had a ‘pet’ fir tree for quiye a few years now. It’s in a huge barrel and gets hauled into the conservatory and decorated every year - it’s about 5 foot now and getting too bloody heavy to shift!

After Christmas it gets hauled back out into the yard until next year.

I don’t like cut trees.

Bowchicawowow · 25/11/2018 16:57

Trees which are commercially grown for this purpose will be replaced with a sapling. The more trees grown the better so no need to get upset.

lyndar · 25/11/2018 16:58

@Bowchicawowow is that always the case ❓these are a family business

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 25/11/2018 16:59

I suppose if you get the tree recycled it’s not such a waste.

Bowchicawowow · 25/11/2018 17:00

Yes because the business needs to have a constant supply of trees to meet the annual demand.

lyndar · 25/11/2018 17:01

@LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD I would rather a fake one 😭it's strange because it's only affected me after seeing the visual of hundreds of trees chopped down and wrapped up .poor trees 😭

OP posts:
lyndar · 25/11/2018 17:02

@Bowchicawowow I hope so , that makes me feel better

OP posts:
GladAllOver · 25/11/2018 17:04

But many fake trees are plastic. Is that a good move?

Bowchicawowow · 25/11/2018 17:05

We have also recycled our real tree every year. They get chipped and composted back into the soul I’ll.

lyndar · 25/11/2018 17:09

@GladAllOver hmm that is a dilemma

OP posts:
Bowchicawowow · 25/11/2018 17:15

And in all honesty lyndar if you are going to get upset about something perhaps you could think about the poor wages and working conditions people are paid to make an artificial tree. That’s a lot more upsetting than trees which will be replaced, being cut down

lyndar · 25/11/2018 17:15

Just read there are approximately 25-30 million fir trees sold each year in the US
WHAT!!!!

OP posts:
lyndar · 25/11/2018 17:17

@Bowchicawowow and this is all for Christmas
It needs to stop

OP posts:
Bowchicawowow · 25/11/2018 17:18

Why does it need to stop Confused

lyndar · 25/11/2018 17:20

@Bowchicawowow because of what You and I just said Confused

OP posts:
Bowchicawowow · 25/11/2018 17:22

Oh you mean the exploitation of people making trees? You know that a lot of things made abroad are made by people in low wages working in poor conditions?

CrazyOldBagLady · 25/11/2018 17:23

Is this a joke? This isn’t deforestation for the sake of Christmas decorations, these trees are farmed. They are planted, harvested and replanted. Do you get upset at the mass destruction of carrots or cabbages when these are farmed for our use?

lyndar · 25/11/2018 17:24

@Bowchicawowow and Christmas is adding to it

OP posts:
Bowchicawowow · 25/11/2018 17:25

In all seriousness OP are you feeling OK?

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 25/11/2018 17:26

Each tree that grows captures carbon and releases oxygen which is good. Do you not have wooden tables/chairs/furniture? Do you not eat vegetables? Each time you eat a carrot it has been pulled out of the ground.

FadedRed · 25/11/2018 17:41

If it weren’t for the Christmas market, these trees would not be planted in the first place. They are a crop, like fruit and vegetables.

californiascreaming · 25/11/2018 17:45

Of all the environmental/welfare issues in our world I think you are focusing on something that is not an issue. Farms that sell christmas trees will have planted those trees just like any other crop and they will be harvested and replaced as such. Your christmas tree is not coming from some untouched virgin forest that has grown naturally.
As others have touched - the plastics industry, low wages, welfare are big issues that are not caused by the real christmas tree industry.
