Need an practical but toddler proof kitchen compost bin??

I have a lovely but curious daughter whose idea of fun is trying to get into the kitchen's food recycling bin. As you might expect, this is not a good thing.

Does anyone have any suggestion for makes / styles of bin that she won't be able to open, but that are not completely impractical to use??

Thank you..

I know it's naff but could you not hang a carrier bag up high and put your bits in there and empty them in the compost bin.

If it's one of the govt. waste thingies, then I would say put it outside and have a tupperware type thingy on your window sill and empty it eveyr day into the official one.........

we use a large tupperware box with a lid and tip into compost when it's full. box lives on worksurface so out of reach of inquisitive children...

Worksurface is of course a great idea - if only we had more of it. No windowsills unfortunately. And my DH is rather particular about some things, so hanging carrier bags are out.. Gah.

I'll keep thinking, and thanks..

We also have a curious toddler, I put our small compost caddy in a kitchen base unit (next to the bin) which has a door lock on it so he cant get to it..

we keep ours on the windowsill (no good for yourselves though!) but do you have space under the sink to put it, and put one of those child-proof latches on the cupboard door? I'd prefer to keep ours under the sink but there's too much other detritus doen there for the compost caddy to fit!

We've got one of those black bokasha (?) bins - you need thumbs of steel to get the lid off. Will try to find a link.

WendyWeber · 22/06/2007 14:46

Hm - can't find a link where they are reasonably priced - I think ours came via the local authority but I am at work atm and can't find the details. I'm sure ours was only about #10 but here it's #40

Have a look at your local authority website under recycling, taliac.

recyclenow.com - it's where I got ours from - you have to buy 2 (you rotate them), the pair cost #25 and you have to buy the bran. So it might be a recycling step too far for you!

I jhave just ordered them WW how big are they?

WendyWeber · 22/06/2007 20:46

They're about a foot wide at the top and just over a foot tall, MrsW.

Ours got shelved a bit, the 1st one went outside when it got smelly and then we went on holiday, I need to get them sorted out again. I found a v helpful thread on them at moneysavingmartin, it said you need to be generous with the bran if you don't want icky smells. I'll try to find it...

WendyWeber · 22/06/2007 20:50

Here it is!

MrsWho · 22/06/2007 21:03

Thanks only ordered the other night so think it usually takes a while to arrive
