Hmm - don't know how they make charcoal

Don't know if they make or dig up CalorGas either

So really this post was completely useless apart for making me realise I know nothiing about (& had not considered) the environmental implications of BBQs

you can buy environmentally friendly charcoal. i.e. produced locally in the traditional sustainable way.

McDreamy · 08/06/2007 09:01

Never gave it a thought tbh

chevre · 08/06/2007 09:04

Wow - when I buy new I will buy environmentally friendly charcoal

Does anyone know if bottled gas is natural or made

Blackduck · 08/06/2007 09:26

Blimey - never tought about this and just in the process of thinking of buying a new one (dp wants gas...)

squidette · 08/06/2007 09:31

this maay help...

I read while looking at this that the best barbeque is a electric one powered from your own wind generator but i dont have one of those - those disposables are a definate no-no in terms of production/waste but for fuel on a normal bbq, i would have thought that sustainable charcoal, like this is the best option.

Blackduck · 08/06/2007 09:41

so could I rig up something whereby the dog runs around generating the power

squidette · 08/06/2007 09:46

!

DH spent all last weekend making charcoal. He has been obsessed with it for ages but usually we end up with a pile of ash, This time however we have a huge sack of charcoal. Made in this way charcoal is carbon neutral in that it is made from a sustainable source (trees) rahter than a fossil fuel. However I am assuming that a lot of charcoal is made using dodgy forrestly methods and releasing toxic gases. So best to buy local ethical stuff but it can get very expensive.

The best BBQ I've come across is the cobb BBQ as you get 3 hours cooking time from 7-8 lumps of charcoal. Its quite small though.

Ssutainably sourced English charcoal
