Hi kittypants - We've had our kitchen caddy for almost a year now and I think it's brill. I guess if your nose is near it when you open it, it smells a bit fruity for a couple of seconds, but ours never smells for more than that.
I try to change the bag every day, depending on what's in it - I'd never leave fish/cooked/raw meats in it for more than a couple of hours. When I empty the bag, I give it a spray with anti-bac and leave for a few mins and then wipe out with tissue. Then I let it air for a while before putting in another bag.
We've never had bad smells: do you eat lots of fish/meat? Maybe it could be that?

Bags? We just chuck everything straight in. Try to empty it every day. Find certain things going in tend to make it smell more than others (left over cereals seems to be worst). Also try to let the dog lick it out each day. Keep the dog happy and gets rid of any smelly crust! His ears are disgusting though

we dont use bags either and dont eat meat or fish(i thought you werent suppose to put that in anyway?)i maybe need to empty it more then.i do about every 3 days so no wonder it smells if every one else empties it daily!whoops!can you put leftover cereal in then?

in the kitchen caddies (I'm assuming they're the same as Somerset's with a closing lid?)I put a corn starch bag (£4.00 for 50) and try to change it daily.
It's so easy with the bags, then I just put them into the large caddy which locks, which I keep in the garage. That bin is gross after a few weeks as the bags decompose before they're weekly collected but a good wash out with hot soapy water should do the trick.

You can put all food waste in them - cooked and raw, meat and fish included. (and cereal).
Perhaps you have different bins to us??!

i mean the little caddy in kitchen not compost bin.our caddy is just smallish lidded tub with handle which we then empty into compost bin in garden.

kittypants, our council gives us charcoal pads to stick underneath the lid of our caddy. They do a good job og absorbing the worst of the niffs

kittypants · 27/05/2007 15:36

oooh nice.i'll phone on tuesday see if our council do them or if they know where i can get them.

oh right - thought you meant the scheme like in Somerset where the council collect the food bins every week! WOuldn't put raw/cooked meat and fish in then if for garden bin.

kittypants · 27/05/2007 15:51

no it would be nice but then its handy having bin in corner of garden.

I have a little caddy but only empty every couple of days , not had a smelly problem yet.

TheodoresMummy · 15/06/2007 21:18

Do you mean a little plastic bucket thing you put your compost into in the kitchen, then empty into the compost bin when it's full ?

If so, I stick a cotton wool pad, with a few drops of essential oil on it, to the lid.

Used to do it with nappy bin which was much stinkier and it really helped.

Frizbe · 15/06/2007 21:20

when you empty it stick half a lemon in it, or use bicarb of soda in the bottom once you've emptied it. Works for me anyway and I have one of those huge blue ikea bins.
