Home delivered shopping - why so many poly bags?

From Sainsburys today I got my shopping in 14 bags, two of which contained only one item. A tad hypocritical when in their store on Friday they had a campaign to encourage customers to use the big re-usable bags and had no normal polybags available. Emailed them to complain but really annoyed about it

Apparently they have different people doing different bits of my shopping so they all put their different bits into their own polybag. I can hand them back to be recycled but I don't need em in the first place

Article in the guardian about this recently with some toss about 'health and safety' (yawn).

just got my delivery and there were 24 plastic bags.!!!!!!!!!!i have just unpacked at warp speed and handed them back to the bemused delivery guy.

sooner they outlaw plastic bags the better.

was just about to post similair op. Just done my shop in store and checkout girl asked if i would like help with my packing. I agreed and honestly she put no more than half a dozen items per bag, they advertise hand five back in and get a bag for life too ! I know they don't want to squash your food but come on

Tesco home delivery often put 1 or 2 items in a bag but they collect all the bags next time they deliver your shopping.

did you read that thing about the Anya Hindmarsh bags. When some one went to buy one the Sainsbury checkout girl put it in a plastic bag.

I have lobbyed (sp) Tesco to charge for people to use their normal bags (like they do in Germany) and they said they would look into it. They waffle on about reusing the bags (which I hasten to add can't really be reused that often as they break) but the real issue is the production of new bags. Surely it would be better if less are produced, not more reused. Reusing is good but is just an excuse as they still produce loads in the first place. We lived in Germany and just took boxes in the back of the car, loaded the food stuff back into the trolley (way quicker than packing it into bags) and then reloaded it into the boxes at the car, which yes takes a bit longer but who cares!

On another thread tonight, someone has said Tesco are now offering bags or no bags with deliveries, as a trial, but not sure whether it's available everywhere yet, or just some areas of the country.

NotanOtter · 08/05/2007 22:10

no bags with my sainsburys shop

CountTo10 · 08/05/2007 22:12

I did mine a week ago and didn't get that option. I just collect them up and give them back to the delivery person the next time round. I can't get over how much those 'I'm not a plastic bag' things are going for on ebay at the moment - scandalous!!! I think they should try and push the schemes where you have the plastic boxes and just have those on the special trolleys and do it that way. Ikea charge for using the normal polybags and I'm sure it's more than if you buy their reuseable ones.

Wouldn't it be lovely if the supermarkets started offering the hemp or jute bags as their "bags for life" instead of the thicker plastic ones which use more plastic and more energy to produce (though to be fair I have seen these in Tesco).

Mind you having spent a month diligently using my hemp bags I now find I have nothing to use as a rubbish bag. Am I going to have to go and buy some bin bags now!

My Sainsbury's take your bags away for recycling

lljkk · 01/06/2007 07:37

This is main reason why I don't do Internet supermarket shoppping, I can't stomach the excess bags they give you. Only 2 pints of milk in a single bag, etc.
