No 'new' clothes 2018

Anyone want to join me in a no buying brand new clothes challenge? I have decided that in order to be more environmentally friendly and ethical I shall avoid new clothes for the year. Charity shops, flea markets and ebay purchases are allowed.

I'm a 37 SAHM but still like to keep up to date fashion wise. So I'm hoping to still look cool at the same time Grin

Anyone want to join and share purchases along the the way?

I'm in except shoes, however I shall invest in some more expensive shoes that'll last longer than my primark.

Bananalanacake · 14/01/2018 19:57

Yeah. Easy. I often go a year without buying myself new clothes. Except M&S pants once a year. My mum gives me clothes she doesn't want anymore. Though my mil buys me new clothes as gifts. Is that Ok? As it's not me buying it. It's a gift.

ElliePhillips · 14/01/2018 19:59

I'm in. But it is mid Jan and I've already bought lots of underwear. Does underwear count? Confused I used to work in luxury fashion so had a ton of stuff but at the end of last year I got into blogs/vlogs on minimalism and have been having a brutal clearout. It is very freeing.

SimonNeilshair · 15/01/2018 13:12

Nice to have some people joining me, thought I was on my own. Grin

No underwear is definitely not included...new undies all the way here!

I have too many clothes really, despite kondo-ing them a couple of years ago. At the moment the only thing I need is jeans, I never see any in charity shops that are the right fit for me. I did get dh some lovely jeans for £2.99 the other day though....he's included in the challenge, even if he doesn't know it Grin

Thank goodness underwear doesn't count - I need new socks!

If you are interested OP I can share links to the minimalist blogs and vlogs I have found. I have too many clothes too. It was a bit of an addiction for a feed years. Confused

I haven't read Mari Kondo's book as, in an attempt to be minimalist, I have read about the book, rather than buying and reading the book.

SimonNeilshair · 16/01/2018 08:57

Yes please Ellie I love getting inspiration from blogs. I'm constantly trying to cut down on the clutter in my life but with 3 kids it seems virtually impossible Shock

I'll join! I love charity shops and rarely buy new clothes anyway but I do occasionally get a bit 'fashion conscious' and decide I need a spending spree (usually satisfied by ordering a few unsuitable things from eBay which I then have to resell when they don't fit Blush).

Love sharing my bargains though, and seeing what others manage to find. I've had some absolutely gorgeous items over the years.

I only buy new if I need underwear, nightwear, slippers or something for a particular ocassion or purpose - eg. a black skirt for a funeral/a specific sport top and shoes.

SimonNeilshair · 17/01/2018 07:46

Welcome Patchworkgirl, the more the merrier. Sounds like you're a bit of an expert charity shopper, I always have a rummage and occasionally will find something, but I need to put in more effort. I've also introduced my teen dd to the delights of CS shopping too Grin she was really chuffed with a couple of jumpers she found in one last week...

I hate buying clothes brand new. Grin Although I've been buying too much from eBay recently... I'm in.

thedevilinablackdress · 18/01/2018 21:16

👍 hope it works out!

thedevilinablackdress · 18/01/2018 21:17

Wrong thread but sentiment stands!

Girlsworld92 · 18/01/2018 21:28

I have a terrible habit of buying little and often, £20 here, £30 there & before I know it I've burnt through £200 on stuff I don't really need so my mission is to use what's in my wardrobe and stop wasting money. If there's something I want it's going on my birthday list (birthday isn't til June!) so there are actually things I want when my family ask me.

SimonNeilshair · 19/01/2018 07:40

I'm like that too Girlsworld. I don't very often have a splurge but if I see something I like I'll buy it regardless of if I need it. I think the main thing for me this year will be to use what I have, if I need anything I will use it as an excuse to rummage in the charity shops Wink

Girlsworld92 · 19/01/2018 07:54

That's my plan to Simon. I've got loads of stuff so want to utilise what I've got & also slim down into stuff I can't fit into anymore! Good luck.

SimonNeilshair · 01/02/2018 13:53

How's everyone doing? Has anyone got any lovely bargains to share? I haven't bought anything yet but I am down to only one pair of jeans. Although it is a pain in this weather, it is forcing me to look what I have in my wardrobe that could be paired with tights and a jumper rather than just sitting waiting for the warmer months.

I’m in! I’m also doing a capsule wardrobe to stop myself just charity shopping every lunch break. I’m using the project 333 model (33 items changing things up every 3 months) for the time being as it seems to suit me and I’m operating a one in, one out policy. Anything that goes out goes to charity/is a hand me down to my sister.

My fave bargains so far are a pair of mint condition Clark’s brogues for work for £6 found in a charity shop, and I got a spring mac now because I saw a stunning Burberry on eBay for £40 Grin I’m trying to buy things that will last instead of spending £2.50 on primark vests from charity shops that were £3 new. I’m having a lot of fun with it, it’s like treasure hunting!

SimonNeilshair · 01/02/2018 20:23

Hi StayGold I've never heard of the project 333 model. Sounds interesting, I'll check it out!

Sounds like you've had some bargains, I'd love to find some new brogues! Mine are falling apart, I noticed today. I got them on ebay and they were well worn then! Luckily I like the well worn look 😁 I'll see if I can get them repaired before I look for some new ones.

I am in!

Duckies · 01/02/2018 20:27

I'm keen, although literally just bought a new shirt today for a job interview (first post baby body!) But I really want to start making most of what I have, doing a clear out, and restocking from charity shops.

SimonNeilshair · 01/02/2018 20:37

Welcome whispering and Duckies

I’ll join! I own too much stuff already, and although I try to buy ethical clothes there’s none so ethical as the ones you already have hanging in the wardrobe. But I’ve just found out I’m having twins so may need to find some even larger maternity wear this time round!

AdultHumanFemale · 02/02/2018 15:27

I can offer the encouragement of experience. I buy 5 pairs of John Lewis pants and socks a year, and the rest is all eBay or charity shops, for me AND the DC. Including shoes. I have been doing this for years, and I love that I am not contributing to the bananas waste of fast fashion.
I know some draw the line at shoes, but there are plenty of barely used footwear, including school shoes, kids' trainers on eBay.
For the kids, I also value the fact that I can 'afford' to make mistakes; DD1 has some sensory issues and will sometimes go off a garment overnight, on account of texture, rustling etc, and if I paid £6 for a winter coat on eBay, it isn't the end of the world.
It is great that this is more of a 'thing' these days, I can't even imagine paying full price for a brand new garment in a shop anymore.

100YearsOfVote · 03/02/2018 07:53

I'm in. I really don't need anything.

I might make a few dresses but that will be with fabric from
My stash rather than any new purchases.

I'm trying to make all my clothes now anyway (apart from
Jeans). But I don't get much time to sew!

SimonNeilshair · 03/02/2018 08:35

I wish I could sew competently 100, bunting is about my limit Grin

birdy just out of interest, where do you normally buy your ethical clothing from?

adult, thanks for sharing your experience, I hadn't thought about including the dc in my challenge. We get given a lot of hand me downs anyway, and I do buy from ebay or charity shops for them occasionally.

Well I have to say I haven't been tempted at all yet, I'm finding it strangely liberating to just walk on by the clothes shops Smile

birdy1978 · 03/02/2018 16:12

Simon mostly second hand, but I live near Totnes so there’s plenty of lovely independent shops with stuff from people tree, monkee genes and similar.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed i’m having more boys so I don’t get inundated with loads of girls clothes.
