I pictured you tying up your horse outside the office .

hah same here

I did used to when it was a handy distance. We had showers at work- essential to be able to cycle I think. If you go for it remember to be cautious on the road and not too giving-- if you make too much effort to pull in motorists will just hem you in further/overtake when theres oncoming traffic. If you keep yourself just a bit inconveniently out there they will have to do things properly, ie indicate and wait until they can pull out to pass you.

I had a rubbish bike. But I did really enjoy the ride, it felt like a real acheivement, when normally travelling to work is just a chore, dead time. Go for it!

I hate the cars around here. They don't give a damn for anyone else. I cycle if i'm to be at work at 5.15am.Finish at 12.00. But me and DH walk quite a bit (if it's not raining)
I work in a garage at the bottom of a hill and he works in an accountants at top of the hill. It's a 10minute walk for me after he's gone. Probably a 20 -30 minute walk in total. Both ways that is.
But i would like to cycle more.

I cycle to work most days - I used to ride a men's Giant mountain bike due switched to a Dawes ladies 'city' bike when pregnant as my bump kept hitting the crossbar!

I ride my bike- a dawes horizon tourer. I have a dynamo hub and front light and rear light is battery but bolted to the rear rack so I dont; have to take the lights off. I chain bike to a rack outside the building with a cable and padlock. So far its always been there when i come out. I suspect drop handle bars and mud gards are not high on the desire list of bike theifs.
How far is half way?
I dont/can;t shower when I get to work , its down hill much of the way and i don;t push it too hard on the way in. In high summer I might have a wet wipe wash and apply de-od on arrival.
in summer I wear bike shorts and change, in winter I tend to just ride in normal clothes, but I get to dress very informally- combats and T mainly.

YEs - all of us do. dd1 (5 yesteday) cycles 1.5 miles to school, I ride to work and so does dh. DD2 has a bike seat so I suppose she does too.

MrsDoolittle · 11/05/2007 20:53

Yep. But its a pain when the tack gets wet

weasle · 12/05/2007 22:08

Do it, do it! I LOVE cycling to work, it makes me feels much more awake when I arrive. The times you get very wet are really few over a whole year - half a dozen??

I have a ridgeback 'hybrid' thing which does the job. I have a 'bike computer' - a nerdy toy that tells me how fast I'm going etc, and I have recently realised I have done about 700 miles since returning to work after mat leave in october. That is quite motivating. I have nagged dh into cycling to work and now we are biking ds to childminder on it.

I leave a coiuple of suits and work shoes at work and bring in undies/shirt/tights each day in rucksack. Once you get intoa routine it is easy.

Good luck!

Another bikist here!!

Moved office base about 2 months ago, so I can ride to work - there, 23-25 mins, home 35 mins. Very steep hill on way, long slow grind of a hill on way back. Shower at work. Do leave a suit there and take jeans and t-shirt in a bag

UniSarah - used to have your bike. Excellent, but traded it for a hybrid bike.

daydreambeliever - yep, so right about "dominating" the lane, and not being shoved into the gutters and grids all of the time.

Get v. wet on some days, but in this country one can't be a fair-weather rider.
