recycling novice - what can go in my curbside recycling?

We've got a curbside collection scheme for paper, cans and glass.

It says the bags for paper can take regular paper, newspaper, glossy leaflets (but not envelopes - why?) and magazines as well as certain types of cardboard. It's the cardboard that I'm not sure about - I know things like empty cereal boxes and ready-meal sleeves are ok. But what about things like the boxes that dishwasher tabs come in, boxes from rice, pasta or dog food? Can any uncorrugated cardboard go in?

And the boxes for glass and cans -I've been putting in things like beer & wine bottles, glass jars from sauces, drink cans and all types of food cans. Is this right? Is there anything else that can go in? And do I need to take the labels off cans? I have been but I'm not sure why!

Thanks.

check the dishwasher packets etc for the recylcing logo - if it has one chuck it into your bag. You don't need to take the labels off your cans ...
Some envelopes have those weirdy clear windows and i think that material can't be recycled ...

The recycling logo is the two arrows kind of making a circle, yes? So any paper, cardboard, cans or glass with that on it should be good?

ok, I've just checked the council web page and it says "clean card" but not cardboard. That's what's confusing me - I'm not sure I know the difference.

yes - that is the logo - clean card is stuff like empty cardboard boxes from dishwasher tablets and stuff - TBH i chuck everything possible which can be recycled in my bags and they are always collected.

Envelopes have the wrong type of glue.

Just be aware you can't put fruit juice cartons in as cardboard as they are made of something slightly different apparently.

But juice cartons are recyclable - see the TetraPak website. You do have to send them yourself though, unless you live in one of the enlightened areas with collection points.

Thanks taylormama

You really have to check with your local council exactly what they can recycle, it varys so much. Mine will take any clean paper and cardboard inc magazines and envelopes, I take the plastic windows out though but it doesn't mention them.

Here in France, Unicef runs a scheme where children bring in juice cartons to school and they are recycled into Christmas wrapping paper which is sold in aid of Unicef. I think some of the designs are done by children too.
In our area, they have just built a new recycling plant and we have recently been given a box for green waste and disposable nappies. They'll be making compost and energy.
