Least toxic dishwasher tablets

I'm trying to get my family to reduce the number of harmful chemicals which we use in everyday toiletries, cleaning products etc.
I think I have a lot of things covered although doing things with castile soap is proving a little tricky.

What has got me stumped is trying to find out if there is a make of dishwasher tablet which uses less chemicals than the likes of Fairy but also cleans well.

any ideas?

Lots of lovely chemicals in there , makes an interesting comparison with the standard ones. More organic chemicals but probably just as toxic.

Agree with the "break them in half" tip, that will cut your chemical use by 50% in one fell swoop!

We just buy the economy/value option in the supermarket and as pp have said, break them in half. Everything comes out perfectly clean, it's cheap and the packaging is much simpler than those "power ball" type sachets. We just got a new dishwasher recently and it came with a mini package of the fancy types so obviously we used them up and didn't notice any improvement on our usual cheap skate ones.

Are the tablets wrapped in plastic? I get loose powder from Waitrose in a cardboard box - less packaging and you can control how much you use

Oh, that's a good idea Juan. because the detergent holder/dispenser thingy on the dishwasher door is so tablet shaped, I've never thought to use the powder. But do you just put a spoon of powder into the dispenser?

I've been using washing powder rather than liquid or tabs for clothes for a while now for the same reason and have been v pleased with it. Plus, I read on a previous thread that you don't get that black build up in the drawer with powder (and I can confirm this is true!)
