I am not enjoying recycling food scraps very much

council has given us two bins: one for the countertop, which I empty daily into a bigger bin on the front step.
we were told when system was introduced not to use binliners, so I tip the scraps in loose. I rinse the countertop bin every time (with a jigger of bleach/antibac which feels very un-eco but waddaya meant to do?). I have never tackled the outdoors one. It is truly horrid in there. And as the weather warms up it will get worse/smellier/attract flies as it did last summer. And no, I'm not going to scrub it out by hand -- for starters we don't have a hose and it ain't coming in the house. (I guess I'm hoping it will begin to self-clean as hair does is rumoured to if you never wash it)
What's the way around this? What's your system?

our London council (richmond) sells eco friendly bin bags that line those green food bins (they aren't v expensive) - it's been so much easier since I started using those. No more horrid cleaning, just a quick wipe once they've emptied it!

Baked potato, I just wanted to say that every time I read your post title it makes me laugh, it's the funniest title I've ever seen I think. Thanks!

I buy cornstarch biodegradable bin liners from here and use them in the food scraps bin.

We're in London too, and there has been no problems using them so far.

all you need to do is use your old newspapers. open the newspaper when peeling veggies and when finished roll-up like they do at the chippy.

put said parcel in a normal bucket with a lid and when full, tip into compost bin. the newspaper helps contain the smell and helps the worms and mirco-organisms break-down the scraps.

I just wash the bucket aftwards (we put fruit peelings, teabags etc in it too). and if still wiffy a splosh of white vinger (kills 90% of known bugs - just like anti-bacs).

hope that helps,
casbie
