Bokashi Anyone?

No, it is not the new SuDoKu, a type of sushi or the latest Kick-Ass film starring Uma Thurman in a yellow tracksuit.

Bokashi

It is the least smelly form of composting. We have just had two small bins delivered from the council to put all kitchen scraps in (including meat and cooked food - can't do that on a compost heap)

The only thing still going in my kitchen bin these days is plastic. The council recycles everything except that.

Only things that goe in our bin are nappies (nature baby ones!) polystyrene and shrink wrap - our council even take plastic!

Looks good though - especially if short of space.

They were free from the council. You have to pay for the bran refills though, but 500g lasts 2 months.

We have put them just outside kitchen door (porch)

Still seem to need a compost heap though

We have been Bokashi-ing for about 9 months and its great. You can put almost anything in them including orange peel, cooked food etc.

The only bit I don't like is washing out the bin once I have emptied it onto my compost heap.

This is because the freshly "pickled" waste does smell a bit strange - not putrid or rotten but just a teeensy bit like puke . Once you get it on your compost heap though it disappears pretty fast, but you do still have to get rid of puky smell from bucket.

any tips for successful use? i bought one last year and my stuff just went mouldy (green as opposed the white it is supposed to go)....and i haven't been brave enough to try it again.

mind you.....you do really need two don't you as they have to be closed for two weeks when they're full, to work properly? (i didn't buy a second because i wanted to see if it worked first!)
