My dh, dd nearly 3 and ds 6mths moved to small cottage in rural area. Living a green lifestyle as in woodburner for central heating, rayburn for cooking/hot water, real nappies, composting , recycling, growing veg, no supermarket shopping, only eating local and organic. have slip ups from time to time but totally passionate and comitted to the planet so feeling good MOSTLY... but it is bloody knackering with small baby, keeping fires going to be warm etc AND cos we live rurally I have to drive to get any where. need some sympathy! please...

sorry x posts, I don't have anything to suggest as regards getting rid of excess ash I just kind of try and turn a blind eye

tirnanog · 06/02/2007 20:56

we are quite well insulated but need to go superinsulated at 300mm thick everywhere, having said that our coldest room with a small radiator in it from the woodburner is 18degrees, the living room is 20+ so we are comfy running off logs. mind you when me or my kids go anywhere- shops, library , we are all rosy cheeked and sweating peeling off layers. everyone seems to live so hot!

and unhealthily, centrally heated homes are so bad for your health.

tirnanog · 06/02/2007 21:12

I'm sorry my posts make no sense-I hate computers and am so slow at typing!

Yarrow · 06/02/2007 21:24

YOu are making complete sense, however do you know if marmalade has been nearly sort of boiling but not quite, for 10mins, will it be done (raeburn misbehavin)

OP posts:

I think it needs to boil a bit longer,my auntie Betty makes marmalade on a range and I think she boils it for about 20-30 mins.

tirnanog · 06/02/2007 21:31

oh hang on I'm being informed now that it needs to simmer for 3 hours so basically I haven't clue but good luck anyway!!!!!!!!

LieselVentouse · 06/02/2007 21:50

You really must change your name

HandyTrinkett · 06/02/2007 22:21

to Yarrow after only reading your initial post - "Can we come and live with you please?"

tirnanog · 07/02/2007 19:18

How's the marmalade?

Yarrow · 11/02/2007 14:11

have I to change my name?
Marmalade is utterly delicious but runny like syrup! boiled it again wi more sugar but no luck, must of pasted the setting point sometime.....so we are pouring it over everything. Yum.

Oh, and Handytrinkett, we just got planning permission for our larch extension, recycled tire tiles, wool insulation etc etc so give us a couple of years and we may have room, or there is always the bottom shed?

I have made a breakthrough at toddlers this week and have a play date so not feeling so lonely anymore. Its just the little things and it doesnt take much to make me happy....

Where is your nearest city/town?
You are doing brilliantly btw -
I completely failed in my attempts to live rurally - nearly had to commit myself to asylum.
