I was about to do it, but DH has just told me that your diet can have a significant adjustment (as much as 50% less) to your carbon emmisions. Eating vegetarian, organic or fair trade products.

Also buying unpacked fresh goods from local fruit and veg and bakers etc.

Is there is a CO2 calculator that takes that into account too?

NannyL · 03/02/2007 13:51

my total was 9455
pruimary 3055

thats shocked me as i have a little fuel efficient car that drives about 8000 miles per year.

and mo TOTAL bill for gas and electricity is less than £30 per month

i never have my heating on more than 15degrees (have a thermometer to check)

my house is double galzed and well insulated

and my hot water is NEVER on for more than 1 hour per day.

i also eat loads of locally produced, and organic products, i avoid over packaged stuff.

have low energy light bulbs throughout house

was at 30C (exceot towels and bedlinen which are 60c)

what else can i do?

AntEater · 03/02/2007 13:55

worked out our schools last week, 83 tonnes..
not including the parents cars tho!

glitterfairy · 03/02/2007 13:58

8,357 is mine. I dont think that is bad if you look at the average.

My ds is campaigning for more local recycling as the area we have moved into is useless at it and so he has been on the local radio and in the papers discussing it. We recycle as much as we can but it now means a drive once a wekk to do it!

worldgonewild · 04/02/2007 12:38

5000kg(5t) without shopping averages; 7000kg for our household with their averages. But we only do about a 1000 miles pa in the car.

Interestingly 30 solar photovoltaic panels (which I had installed at work) only save 2500kg CO2 pa, so very difficult to reduce this household footprint!

Twiglett · 04/02/2007 12:42

primary was 2001, total was 7900

worldgonewild · 04/02/2007 12:56

So, from this little poll so far it looks like the household average for a family is 8000kg CO2 or 8tonnes.

How are we going to get this down?! It's the MN Carbon Footprint Challenge ... bit of a mouthfull.

MrsBadger · 04/02/2007 12:59

I haven't calculated our footprint as I am too lazy to move from the sofa to find the figures at the moment ,
but the single easiest and most impactful thing we've done was use Uswitch.com to change our electricity supplier to one who only uses renewable energy (mostly hydroelectric stations in Scotland).

It takes zero effort and it doesn't cost any more than the bog-standard Southern Electric we had before. Just do it!

nikkie · 04/02/2007 19:07

7924 .It told me to change electricity cupplier to a green one but I had ticked that box
