but the ones I've tried give off this dispiriting murky-brown light. Has anyone found a brand that actually gives off proper light?

FWIW : Replacing three 100 Watt light-bulbs with 18 Watt efficient-light bulbs will save the same amount of CO2 as a passenger?s CO2 emissions from a return flight to Spain.

That should cheer you up even if it is a dim glow!

Our house is full of them and I have to day I hate them.

The light is crap, they take ages to come to full light so if you need it quickly its not going to happen and I end up putting on more lights to see.

Also some mothers weere talking at a play area last week about how they felt they had done some good to environment etc by low watt bulbs and 30 degree washes and I asked them to look around at the other buildings in the business park where we were. They were all full lit up inside and out and it was 7pm on a Friday evening.

Part of me feels why should I live in dim light when all these offices and businesses which had shut for the weekend were like Blackpool illuminations and stayed like that. My work even asks me to leave my computer switched on all weekend and there are 400 of them at least on my site alone

I've found the Phillips ones fine I just bought ones that had a higher watt equivalent.
Look out for then in places like Netto at around 59p Adli also do them at around 99p
