Anyone else freaking about this weather?

Up to last week it was kind of mild and pleasant, but now it's just sooooo warm here, mu daffodils are budding and ready to bloom and I'm freaking! What kind of future are my boys going to face, and how can doing a bit of recycling and turning down the heating a bit help at all?!! Seriously thinking of moving to a farm on a Scottish Island and hoping for the best . . .

According to the news, it is a result of El Nino and not necessarily the begining of a long term trend.

However, I'm quite enjoying it. The warmer the better.

Notquitesotiredmum · 04/01/2007 13:25

Hi Uwila but El Nino is natural phenomenon, made worse by warming sea temperatures, and the warmer the climate, the warmer the sea, the more excessive the El Nino effect.

And I'm not sure that El Nino is here yet, either!

Guess I'm not looking for reassurance, just fellow panickers today. (I'm usually more optimistic)

.... make sure you move to higher ground!

Just been listening to The World Service. An article about the new 'seed vault' they are building in Norway. Will store over 3 million seed samples and be located deep in a mountain.

This is apparently to secure human kind's future. They believe climate change is making the future very tricky indeed.

We could all live on boats.

worldgonewild · 04/01/2007 14:04

like this?!

KTeePee · 04/01/2007 14:20

I don't actually think the weather is that unusual - I remember Christmas being mild more often than not when I was a child - often went to church without a coat on Christmas Day

Ripeberry · 04/01/2007 14:29

Hi, this weather is not good for wildlife in the British Isles as lots of foreign species are going to start to invade and everything is going out of sync.
Everyone thinks that global warming will mean that we will have hot summers, but we are more likely to have mild/wet winters and
middling summers with very heavy downpours.
OK we'll all save on the heating but we will be knee deep in mud.
Nature has to balance out somewhere. At the moment there is hardly any cold over the USA, Russia or Europe where has the cold gone?
I feel that in the next 3 weeks we are all going to have a big shock when winter finally decides to wake up.
I'm stocking up on the firewood :0

megandsoph · 04/01/2007 14:32

We have had snow around Feb / March for the last few years now haven't we?

Ripeberry · 04/01/2007 14:33

Just to add, there are lots of weather sites dedicated to watching the weather and they can be understood by everyone and there are lots of forums discussing the weather we are having
WWW.theweatheroutlook.co.uk and WWW.net-weather.co.uk.

uwila · 04/01/2007 14:34

erm... no. That one's not really my style. More like an aircraft carrier with a nice deck.

worldgonewild · 04/01/2007 17:23

Much safer in a storm

uwila · 04/01/2007 17:52

And my friends can fly over for tea.

Pixiefish · 04/01/2007 17:55

Wet and windy here. Worst winds that have been had in these parts for years

RubberDuckInLeftoverCurry · 04/01/2007 18:00

Remember we had a late spring this year too - not totally unexpected that the winter might be a little delayed and that may well be a contributing factor.

According to my gardening book, it's quite common for December to be mild, too - so I'm guessing it's not a new phenomenon.

RubberDuckInLeftoverCurry · 04/01/2007 18:03

(of course, I panicked a bit last year when I told some friends that there were trees blossoming outside our local school and how it was a sign of the times... they pointed out that it was a winter flowering cherry and was supposed to flower between November and March )

Callisto · 05/01/2007 13:13

Actually Spring 06 arrived at the normal time, it is just that we are so used to early springs that it seemed late.

expatinscotland · 05/01/2007 13:21

People think, 'Oh, I love all the warm weather.'

They don't realise that warm + wet = all kinds of diseases that aren't very much fun.

Nasties like dengue fever, West Nile virus and malaria.

Lots of water round also means problems w/containing sewage.

Anyone want the return of cholera and typhus to go w/their lovely hot summer?

Enid · 05/01/2007 13:27

Its CRAP

we run a glove company

belgo · 05/01/2007 13:28

It's also been incredibly warm in Belgium. It is freaky. I was especially freaked out when I went to my SIL's house and saw a tree full of blossom in her garden, but she explained that it is a special variety that is supposed to blossom in winter.

belgo · 05/01/2007 13:30

Enid - I bought a whoolly jumper last week but took it back when I realised that it probably won't be cold enough to wear it.

Enid · 05/01/2007 13:31

aha

there is a bitter cold snap coming apparently

uwila · 05/01/2007 13:33

I realise those things, and I still love the warm weather.

Just glad I don't own a beach front property.

poppiesinaline · 05/01/2007 13:34

oh no at mild winters and middling wet summers
I like it HOT HOT HOT.

It is a bit worrying. I try not to think about it >
