What it's worth being frugal about?

For example: Juicing my own apples not really worth it. A health satisfaction. I suppose it's a matter of taste in more ways than one. But collecting own firewood really worth it financially.

Do you waste time being frugal?

Do you have examples where being frugal is a big financial saver?

Shopping at Aldi saved me £960 in one year. That I find is worth it.

buying 25 kg bags of spuds & 10 kg bags of rice are definitely worth it.

Cutting open 25p tubes of toothpaste to get the last 3p worth out is not financially valuable, but I can't help it anyway.

oohh I am getting my spuds tomorrow!

Where do you get 25p toothpaste from?

You see I looked at the 10kg bag of rice and the ones I found were the same price per kg than the normal ones Confused

If you can find 10 or 20kg bag of onions, that is worth looking at.

Worth doing:
picking apples from your trees and freezing them cut into quarters.
Picking berries and freezing them
firewood

Worth for the quality:
jams
bread

I love carboot sales and can understand waiting for things to come up and they do eventually. If I did not then:

it would be a poor exchange of time and money and not worth it.

However, I feel Charity shops are even more worth it as everything is presorted. There is a huge difference in price between CS and CBS. But I can see that you have a much larger range of things to buy at a carboot so maybe I will have to Charity Shop shop in winter and CBS in summer?

Sainsbury's value toothpaste is 25p a tube, I think.
10 kg bags of white basmati rice in Halal shops or on offer in Lidl have been our successes. Or 5 kg of basmati in Lidl, it might be.

My favourite hobby is charity shop shopping. ooh I think I am going today

Currently I am wearing my brand new pyjamas I found in one shop for £5

Can someone tell me where to go and what to look for I need a challenge/inspiration? Not just clothes because I can only wear one set at a time. So more than three outfits is a waste, but still I cannot resist.

I have 5 hunting grounds all in areas of least deprivation according the the National Office of statistics. I call my shopping "buying trips" because I usually manage a good haul for all the family.

This is definitely worth it as it is so much fun.

the 10-item capsule wardrobe

The principles, in brief:

  • select just a few pieces from your wardrobe (the suggestion is 10, but that does not include occasion-wear, coats and accessories)
  • wear your good stuff all the time as it won't otherwise see the light of day. Use it up, look good at all times and when it is worn out ditch it.

I confess I haven't done this, mainly because my stuff is far too expensive to part with. Although I have a separate clothes rail and ironically before I read the book set aside just 6 pieces on it to wear over the course of every fortnight, including smart jeans and a summer blouse for weekends over the last 3 months - admittedly so I could manage my washing better whilst trying to fix and then awaiting the delivery of a new machine, but that's another story ! I do however feel very critical of any item of clothing that no longer looks right, and am inclined to discard both these and clothes that I would otherwise slob around the house in now I no longer wear them, so the potential is there .

Any takers? Let us know how you get on with this.

I think this is definitely worth it.

Halloween

I will be getting out all the Halloween tat (ornaments, decourations ect ) out - all collected from Freecycle and put that up usually with some balloons from the pound shop. I store everything every year just like Christmas things.

Putting up any artwork, craft items Halloween related that the children have made.

Pumkins from Aldi carved as an activity and put outside with candles inside.

Costumes the cheapest are usually Tesco. Although one year my eldest only needed a bath sheet with holes as he really wanted to be a ghost.

Put the trick or treat sweats from Aldi in a bowl by the front door.

Go out trick or treating meeting the whole village as we pass each other by.

Made the most frugally I possibly can and definitely worth it as the kids have so much fun.
