mooncup and reusable pads

hi, I see there is an old thread about this but my questions are a bit different.

I have mega heavy periods, as in sometimes I change a night time pad every hour for two days otherwise I leak. I'm worried with a mooncup I will leak or fill it and have a messy time in the bathroom.

also as they are super heavy I'm worried that cloth will not cut it.

I'm desperate to try them out as I use cloth nappies for ds and I also end up with nasty spots etc after using disposable pads.

what should I try?

I would try an XL meluna cup and see how you get on. You can always have a pad underneath til you see how well it works, and how long it lasts before full.

If you get to the loo before it overfills, cleaning can be fine (I can wipe well enough with loo paper to walk out and wash my hands at work.

Never used cloth, so can't comment on that, sorry.

thank you addicted I will go search for that one.

I don't use a cup but I use cloth pads and I'm fairly heavy. I would defo say use a cup and a pad until you are comfortable with how often you need to change.
Most people say their periods get shorter and lighter when they switch to reusables. Fingers crossed!

My experience is that a mooncup holds more than a tampon (I can get 12 hours out of a mooncup for bleeding that would cause a medium tampon to leak after 4 hours). It's better to empty a cup before it gets full, at least until you get the hang of it, because it is a bit harder to get a very full cup out without spilling, but once you have the knack, it's fine. Mooncup shave teeny holes near the rim which act as a sort of leakage early warning- when they fill up the level of the holes, you feel a sort of popping sensation as air is pushed out of the holes, which gives you time to get to the loo. I often use a cloth pad as back-up, just in case, and because they feel kind of snugly which is nice when I have period pains.

thank you ladies. I have fibroids which make my periods really heavy so not sure a change will change them but I guess you never know. I think I shall get one and some cloths pads, I'm fed up with the plastic.

Justfussy bamboo/wool pads are gorgeous and it takes A LOT to get through them. She's on Etsy as well. They are my all-time favourites.

I'm also a big fan of MeLuna cups.

Sponges (natural sea sponges, buy them specially or tear them to size) are brilliant (as long as you moisten them first!) They hold a HUGE amount. And you can even double up if you are really heavy or going to out and about for a really long time.

Teresa Francis's Feminine Wear is a treasure trove of all such things.

Agree with swampster, Feminine Wear is awesome. I like Boobalou as well.
