Do people actually know how much electricity they use?

I worked it out today & it frightened the pants off me

I think I must supply a small housing estate

Do any of you know how much you use?

In KW/Hrs rather than cost (iyswim)

nope no idea, all I know is that I put money in the meter every month and when I go to add more the next month more often than not there is still a fair amount left. So I guess It's not that much for me.
I wouldn't know how to work out how many Kw, etc

Katymac · 07/10/2006 21:41

Well I don't know about a prepayment meter - but take the meter reading from about a year ago away from todays and divide by 365 to get a days worth - then divide by 24 to get an hours worth and that is how many KW you use an hour

We've got a KwH ticker/meter... er... somewhere. (We had one in our old flat in which you could actually see the disc thing that propelled the meter turning round. That was good as far as discipline - turning lights off, fitting energy-saving bulbs - goes).

vitomum · 07/10/2006 21:44

i just found out my usage for the year so i can swith supplier. apparantly i used 5,500 units last year.

Katymac · 07/10/2006 21:47

I think you need the figue off your bill to convert that to KW/H otherwise I am using 15 times more electric thatn you

I know I use a lot - but I didn't think it was that much

PretendFriend · 07/10/2006 21:50

We use about 20kw a day average, all year round.

Is that a lot?

Katymac · 07/10/2006 21:56

That's a littl e more than vitomum

Maybe I worked mine out wrong

Back to the drawing board

OP posts:
Katymac · 07/10/2006 21:58

No I worked mine out right

Oh cr*p

Mind you mine is heating too

Are either of yours?

OP posts:
PretendFriend · 07/10/2006 22:04

oh no, our heating/hot water is gas - so is the hob. We do have a lot of low-energy light-bulbs but also halogen bulbs in kitchen & bathroom, the d/w and w/m are run most days and the dryer for 30-60 mins, the oven is electric and has no door seal, and the PC is on about 20 hours a day!

Our electric usage is pretty even all year round, I would guess yours is higher in the winter?

Katymac · 07/10/2006 22:15

Yeah - well high in winter

That makes sence tho'

You probably spend as much on both as I do on one (iyswim)

Panic over

OP posts:
PretendFriend · 07/10/2006 22:17

Our gas costs less - switched suppliers in April so haven't had a full year yet but our DD is £55 for leccy, £45 for gas so far.

Electric heat is the most expensive by far, had you thought of changing?

Katymac · 07/10/2006 22:18

No gas in the village

I am getting solid fuel heating in about 4-6 weeks (I can't wait)

But my work area is still electric so I am going to use the night rate for that and see how it goes

OP posts:
CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 07/10/2006 22:19

Not the faintest idea. Too much probably.

PretendFriend · 07/10/2006 22:20

Day rate on economy 7 is very high - will you be using much during the day or will it be mostly NSH?

Katymac · 07/10/2006 22:27

I worked it out and it is within pennies the same - that is so spooky

OP posts:
vitomum · 07/10/2006 22:34

no, my total doesn't include any heating / hot water. that is all from gas and my usage on that is terrifying. I know some people with solid fuel and it is a bit more hasstle but sooooooo much cheaper.

Katymac · 08/10/2006 11:36

Well we are in all day everyday - so I am hoping it will be OK
