London neighbourhoods without jet noise?

Do they exist? Have lived in North and West London and everywhere we go, we hear planes. DD (3yo) says at night she opens her eyes every time one flies over and closes them once they've passed. I don't want this to be normal for her!

I've looked at the flight path maps that Heathrow publishes and it looks like every area we'd consider is in the flight path. Seriously considering looking outside London now, if we could find a nice community within commuting distance.

The whole "you get used to it" approach doesn't work for us, btw, It's been several years and we still notice planes that no one else seems to hear. Blessed with extra good hearing, I suppose! But I'd rather hear owls.

Hmm. London is a busy noisy city with loads of traffic noise including planes. So to an extent you kind of have to suck it up or leave. But I live in south east london (near crystal palace) and I rarely hear planes. Police helicopters on the other hand...

How far out do you live?

I've lived in zone 2, north, east and south, and I don't remember ever hearing plane noise, even when I lived on quiet streets.

I wonder if it might be worse if you go farther out to where the airports actually are. there's city, gatwick and luton to worry about too.

SilverSixpence · 19/05/2014 08:52

We are in SE London and have no problem with jet noise at all

Blithereens · 19/05/2014 09:06

SE London here too, don't hear planes but I certainly hear trains and automobiles. And berks.

eversomuch · 19/05/2014 21:29

we're in a relatively quiet part of Haringey. previously lived father out , closer to the green belt & rarely noticed planes. then lived near Heathrow & now notice them everywhere.

haven't spent much time in se London. maybe worth looking into if we decide this area isn't for us.

I know noise is part of city life & I don't expect silence but being woken up by planes at 6am everyday (or earlier) truly sucks.

I'm in NE London (Walthamstow) and planes do go over, but they're high up and not noisy - think they must be going to Stansted.

Damnautocorrect · 20/05/2014 11:59

Se would be your best bet. Although i don't know what gatwicks expansion plans are.
West London is taken over with heathrow really. Even North London has heathrow stacking over it. (Keep going north and your hitting Luton) Stansted's flight hours are longer than heathrow, so start earlier and finish later.
If you are looking to move out of London don't forget to check where raf bases are or you could jump from one to another

BristolRover · 20/05/2014 12:03

it also depends massively on wind direction - we moved out of London after DH rejected Chiswick because of the plane noise. Our first night in the countryside sounded like we were on the third runway site - I wanted to cry, however it's never happened since - some freak combination of the stacking that night plus wind direction made it awful.

fuckinglondonballs · 20/05/2014 12:05

Despite heathrow being in the borough, a lot of Hillingdon doesn't get much noise because of how the planes have to line up to get on the runways - they just can't go low over the rest of the borough.

eurochick · 20/05/2014 12:06

We are in SE London and do have planes flying overhead (we have skylights in the bedrooms and it's amusing to see the plane shadow scoot down the duvet) but they are quite high here so not very noisy.

Bramshott · 20/05/2014 12:19

We used to live in Charlton, SE London and it was almost completely silent at night. Much noisier once we moved out "to the country" but fairly close to an A road...

RiverTam · 20/05/2014 12:23

I'm in inner SE London and we certainly have planes going over morning and night. Doesn't bother me unless DD wakes me just before 5ish when they start in the morning. We've been here for 10 years, and before that we were in SW London where they were louder!

(why is this 'Ethical living' btw?)

eversomuch · 20/05/2014 20:23

I've usually found that when people say "there are planes but they're not that loud", I find them very loud. I wish I could tune them out. Maybe I should try hypnosis or something.

Bristol I felt the same our first night after moving to north London. Was sure we had escaped the planes but there they were ... and still are. Glad your experience turned out to be a one-off.

DamnAC Have thought about RAF bases, too. And all the other airports. Challenging!
