For us..

I refuse to reuse cooking oil..it always has a nasty taste..seems very wasteful though..

We use disposable nappies..we tried washables, but it's too much work and looking at figures on how much energy washing reusables costs I'm even more convinced.
We now buy the 'moltex' biodegradable ones..since we had them..no nappy rash etc, but still feel a bit guilty..

We do the bulk of our shop in the supermarket most weeks..theres only so much you can get from local butcher/farmers markets etc..

I buy lithium batteries..nothing worse than a battrey running out at a cruial moment and these last for ages..

You're missing Swabian recycling fetish CF? Shock Grin TBH, despite shiny bright enviro-halo, I'm fed up with having 5 bins in my small kitchen (compost, packaging, tin cans, non-classifiable household rubbish, paper) plus empty bottles and jars on the worktop... How are things? P*ssing it down over here :(

If you ever want any particular H&M clothes, Franny, I can attempt to get them for you and send them over :)

geekgrrl · 26/05/2006 19:59

use a tumble dryer even during a heatwave Blush
only recycle glass (no containers for anything else within half an hour and council is refusing us kerbside service as we're on a private roadAngry)
use disposables because we get them for free
shop at supermarket - life's hard enough without having to go to lots little shops without pushchair access
Oh, and we live somewhere without decent public transport so I use the car lots - but at least we've got rid of the gas guzzlers we used to have

expatinscotland · 26/05/2006 20:05

use a tumle dryer. a lot. Blush

threebob · 26/05/2006 20:06

Buying stuff that comes from miles away - but in my defence there isn't a lot of NZ made gluten free food in the essential category - lots of bloomin biscuits but only 1 breakfast cereal (which is horrible).

PiccadillyCircus · 26/05/2006 20:11

Not having a compost bin (DH says it would smell too much).

Shop at supermarkets.

Buy clothes from H&M and Primark etc.

Have two cars

babyonboard · 26/05/2006 20:19

my mum has a tumble dryer.... when i'm staying at hers i love to spin my underwear/clothes for a while and they come out smelling great and toasty warm..

the dryer makes the cloth nappies all soft Blush

babyonboard · 26/05/2006 20:20

fennel · 26/05/2006 20:37

going on planes fairly often. just can't get used to not going abroad much.

babyonboard · 26/05/2006 20:37

i asumed so.lol..but then the post doesnt make much sense...

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 26/05/2006 20:46

I think threebob is saying that she buys stuff that has been imported from other countries (ie not made in New Zealand), but is explaining that she has to because they don't make much gluten free stuff in NZ. Why I am trying to figure this out I don't know :)

threebob · 27/05/2006 00:21

Yes I am in NZ - so I would prefer not to buy things made overseas (except cotton etc. which can't grow here). But all the GF stuff is made in Australia (or California - which is even worse).

juuule · 27/05/2006 15:33

tumble dryer, supermarket.
Should also walk more rather than using the car, but it just takes up too much time to walk everywhere.

sharklet · 29/05/2006 16:27

I suppose the tumble drier is my worst sin. Although I do give the lint to my worms - not that it makes up for it at all.

I like to think we have a balance of sorts whereby we are green in balance with the other stuff like shopping in tescos etc.

We do it less and less though the more we manage to grow ourselves.
