Bike seat on a mountain bike

Am delighted to stumble across a whole new area of Mumsnet when searching for info on bike seats. Wondered if any of you cycling-with-kids gurus could help me out?

Have got a great bike seat for my 14 mo DS - one of the Hymax ones I think (second hand). Fits perfectly on DH's mountain bike, and we've got two of the bits that fit on the bike. Except we've hit a slight hitch - my bike is a women's mountain bike with the smaller female-friendly frame, which means that the seat ends up resting on top of the rear tyre as the 'prongs' don't seem to be long enough.

Is there a solution (don't see how I can put the fixer bit any higher), or are there other types of seats that will work better? (everything else I could see needed a luggage rack).

Do the seats that sit baby in front of you, behind the handlebars, work a)on a women's frame and b)if you're quite short? I have visions of not being able to see anything over the top of kid plus helmet! Also, would it make any difference with these that I've got front suspension (though I can lock it if needed).

Ta in advance for any help!

Hmm, interesting. I have a women's mountain bike with a smaller frame. We have 2 Hamax bike seats - one we bought new. This one fits fine on my bike. Another we got second hand & does exactly what you are experiencing - hits the back tyre everytime we go over a bump. Since I just made sure to use the one that does work, I don't have a definite answer for you, but it looked to me like it was possible to move the seat forward along the prongs & then it wouldn't bump the tyre anymore.

Ah, thanks. I'll have a play and adjust. Doesn't help that because its second hand we don't have any instructions! Might see if I can pick up a newer one and see if that's better.
