There's a kid in my DS class, he's 11 years old and he is telling some of the children he's carrying a knife. Apparently, a few have seen it. Do I tell the school? I don't want to get the kid in trouble, as far as I know he's a good kid, and if the poor kid is innocent I don't want to be that OTT mum.

Make it your priority to speak with the safeguarding lead at the school tomorrow first thing.

I would speak to the school definitely.
You really can’t ignore this and do nothing.
If it’s found to be not true, then that’s fine. But if this child is carrying a knife in school and showing others, it needs reporting.

MummyofTw0 · 09/12/2019 22:26

100% yes you have to say. What if a child gets hurt

Also; this child needs educating as to why knifes are dangerous x

OxiBrilloRange · 09/12/2019 22:45

Of course you need to tell the school!!!!!!

I can't believe you need to ask.

Would you tell the school if he had a gun??
Of course you would.

Both a knife and gun can kill.

Why is he carrying? Perhaps he is scared of someone - ergo telling the school will help him!

School office first thing. Key words: safe guarding. Please don't let this one go.

Luckingfovely · 09/12/2019 22:51

You don't want to get him in trouble?

He is telling other children that he has a knife.

How would you feel if your DC gets stabbed, or one of his friends?

If you really think this is an ethical dilemma - go and have a hard look at your ethics. Or, you know, just do the right thing and report it to the school RIGHT NOW before a child gets stabbed.

If it's meaningless, then you were overly concerned. If a child gets stabbed and dies, it will be on your conscience forever.

newdeer · 09/12/2019 22:52

You really do want to be that parent who is concerned someone might get stabbed at school.

CherryPavlova · 09/12/2019 22:54

Better in trouble than dead.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 09/12/2019 22:55

WTF yes tell school!

pinkpink33 · 09/12/2019 23:20

Yes, I definitely will call up tomorrow, just needed assurance I wasn't being ott. I How his parents don't know or where he got it from, if does have one is beyond me. But yes if nothing else maybe it something that should be discussed in school especially what's going on nowadays.

I have a feeling he might just be fibbing, but obviously shouldn't risk it.

Yes, tell school straight away. I not only did this myself, I also phoned local police station and told them. They told me that the child's name was "known to them".

BovaryX · 15/09/2020 13:42

An 11 year old kid is bragging about carrying a knife and you are dithering about whether to tell the school? How will you feel if he stabs someone? If he is lying, perhaps it will teach him that lying about carrying a dangerous weapon is stupid. If he is telling the truth, he needs to be confronted by an adult in authority.

As this happened last year I would imagine that the situation is now resolved.
