Should my DD charge for design work?

My DD has worked up some lovely design ideas that might be used on a website at the company for which I work. If the company does go with the design, should she charge for it? And if so, how much? It has taken her half a day to devise the concept and will take her about two days to follow through and create illustrations for the rest of the site. She's 14.

Yes they should pay if they are going to use her design, no idea how much though.

As a rule of thumb, this might help: my workplace used a US based at work to commission a piece of design for our website: all the designers made proposals and we picked the one we liked. To obtain the right to use it for as long as we liked cost in the region of £250. This was for an adult (not that I know if that's relevant - if it's good, it's good).

I am not sure about charging because this should have been discussed beforehand. Could she not have copyright to the design or something. Or maybe ask if the company would be happy for her to use it in future e.g if she is applying for a job she could use it as an example of her work. It would also look good on her CV.

No, not unless this was discussed beforehand. She is 14 - this should be about getting her 'work' out there, so that it will look good on a CV later. I think it would be very wrong to demand ask for payment.

My initial reaction is to do it for free/ low cost, and start a portfolio.

If her work is fantastic it may be worth charging.

A bit late now, and easy to be clever in retrospect and from afar, but this is what contracts are for - even for small jobs by 14 year olds. They're as much about managing expectations as anything else, for both parties.

If it's early days, you could still probably bring payment into things. Otherwise you could just get a visible credit on the site to maybe get a few bites from end users, and use it as the start of a blossoming portfolio.

She doesn't need copyright her work.. The work is already copyright to her as she create d it & they cannot use it without her permission. if they do, she can write a cease & desist letter && then take them to the small claims court!! Speak to the company & say u would like them to pay a small amount as an incentive for her & so it is a bit more professional (though u will need to set her up as self employed with the inland revenue if she is to take money)..
