Stick-on name labels that survive care home laundry

Hi,

Can anyone recommend reliable stick-on name labels for clothes? Mum has been in a care home for nearly two years now and I've been buying stick on name labels from a company on Amazon.

The problem is they are falling off in the laundry where everything seems to be washed at 60 degrees - she's lost so many clothes.

I know losing clothes is inevitable in a care home but it's getting ridiculous. Every time I visit I'm having to take a new supply. Mum loves the constantly refreshed wardrobe but my bank balance isn't so keen....

Thanks xx

Stikins are excellent IME

MerylSqueak · 14/08/2026 17:52

Stikins are good.

I've also had labels for items like lunch boxes from Tinyme which have been amazing. One I have has been on the item for 5 years and it looks pristine. I haven't had their clothes ones though. They're aimed at kids but we got quite plain ones

Another vote for stikins!

I'd use the iron on ones, they are much firmer than the stick on type.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 14/08/2026 17:55

We use permanent pens and mark her clothes with it .

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 14/08/2026 17:56

I used nametag-it.co.uk . They have little clips so no sewing and no relying on adhesives in a hot wash.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 14/08/2026 17:56

If they are washing her clothes at 60° then I don't think Stikins will work, as they are only tested in washes up to 40°.

I have a relative in a care establishment, and was specifically told to either write the name on the label with a laundry marker, or use sew in labels, as the sticky ones 'always fall off'. I mostly sew labels in.

Thank you all for the recommendations. I'll look at all of them and may test a few options.

Unfortunately they are washing everything at 60 degrees - we've also had a few favourites returned half the size which has upset mum but they won't change their system and the care is excellent which is the main thing.

I realise now I should have gone with iron on but it's too difficult to organise it now Mum's in the home.

Can you ask the home to be sensible and wash at a much lower temperature. This must be a problem for all residents and their relatives. Maybe if they fail to folliw the washing instructions you should insist that the home pays to replace it

4Tornot4T · 14/08/2026 18:21

I can't believe I hadn't even thought of a marker pen or a stamp on mum's clothes. I've used a marker pen on some of mum's non-washable items - hats, fan etc but I'll give it a go on clothes. The stamp looks great too.

I think I'm going to try some Stikins for items that don't go to the laundry. She leaves all her things like phone, sunglasses in different areas of the home and if they aren't named it takes ages for her to be reunited with them.

@SmallTreeDeepRoots - I'm struggling to find nametag-it.co.uk. Probably user error (on my part though - I'll look again)

@OldJohn. Loads of relatives have complained about the laundry - it's an ongoing saga in the home. They say they don't wash everything at a high temperature but so much does get shrunk or lost. It could be the tumble drier though as everything goes into that too.

To be fair to them they are trialling a new system but I'm not going to rely on it! They did ruin a down coat of mum's when she first moved in. For some bizarre reason they washed it after she had worn it once and it was completely wrecked. It wasn't even dirty. They did compensate us though.

We looked at so many homes and this was by far the best so I'm trying to keep things in perspective - the care, accommodation, activities are all outstanding and that really is the main thing. And I'm replacing anything with clothes from Primark so mum doesn't get upset if things get ruined.

Another vote for stikins. So easy to use and don’t seem to come off.

ForPinkDuck · 14/08/2026 18:43

I met somewone that did all their mums care home washing!

My friend recently had her father enter a care home. They provide their own labels but need to be ordered . It's taking ages and in the meantime she is doing all his laundry at home .

TheSmallAssassin · 14/08/2026 18:50

I did sew in ones when my kids were at school, it's a faff sewing them in, but they stay put and you can snip them off when you replace clothes and sew them into the new ones, so one purchase does you.

We do this too.

HelenaWilson · 14/08/2026 19:02

A care home I know of tags residents' clothes with the room number. Relatives aren't required to label them.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 14/08/2026 19:04

@4Tornot4T Sorry! I haven’t ordered for a while. Clicked through from an old email order and the address is now nametags4u.co.uk . It’s the easy fix clips - under the menu for care homes. I used them for school too.

The Stikins will survive 60 degrees washes - I used them for the DC's school clothes and they went through plenty of washes at that temperature.
