Elderly parents

Suicidal ideation

I’m currently battling to get the proper amount of care from our local council for my elderly mum. In the past few days she’s expressed suicidal ideation but after talking to her about it has no plans (and is fine - I think it’s her expressing frustration at her health). If I contact the mental health team at the council will it affect her care claim?

It is perhaps quite normal and understandable to have some suicidal thoughts when you are battling with ill-health and all of the changes and challenges of old age. Would it be more helpful to frame these thoughts in terms of the urgency around providing her with adequate overall care, rather than as a distinct mental health issue?

Thanks - yes I suppose I’m concerned about any disruption to the ongoing ridiculous shenanigans to get her adequate care (now 7 months and counting) - but I’ll probably contact the mental health team

It sounds like you’re carrying a lot while also trying to make sure your mum gets the support she needs. From what you’ve described, contacting the mental health team should not negatively affect her care claim. It may actually help provide a clearer picture of her current well-being and the level of support she requires. Even if her comments are coming from frustration and declining health, it is still worth making professionals aware so they can offer appropriate guidance and support.
