Elderly parents

LPA and using access codes

As Attorney for an elderly relative, how do I use access codes for HMRC, DWP, Pensions companies etc?
I’ve used the activation key (original documents are paper) and know that I can generate codes as needed.

I’ve sorted banking stuff in person but I’m a bit flummoxed as to how to ‘use’ any code I generate. I can’t find any online forms to complete for the various government agencies thereby submitting the code that way, or are there specific postal addresses that one would use to write enclosing a relevant code?

When acting as an Attorney previously, activation and access codes didn’t exist and it all involved posting copies of the LPA.

TIA

I had come across that info earlier thank you.

I think my problem is that other than writing to the various organisations I don’t know ‘how’ to pass on any code I generate.

Perhaps with my skewed thinking I’m making life more difficult for myself as I assumed I could just fill in a form online, add a code and magically everything would be taken care of!

i've not used it for DWP or HMRC, but when I've done it for banks etc as far as I can remember I think they asked (either on the phone or via e-mail) to generate a code for them and I then either phoned or e-mailed it back to them ...

I rang the bank and gave them the code, then they emailed me links to upload my ID docs.

From my experience in recent years, most organisations want the original document still

I am using at the moment, my advice would be to go online - www.gov website and generate a code for each company you want to use it for eg Southern water and then when you ring or email then give them the code. It lasts a month or so and once they've seen it you should be added and someone they can talk to one behalf of your relative for good. You have my sympathy as no one makes it easy but it is prefable to uploading the paperwork to each company!

Thank you.

This how I hoped it might work - of course finding relevant contact details for the various companies/organisations will be another hurdle. Just as well I’m retired!

I'd suggest trying the bereavement department - most large companies have them. I know it's not the same thing but they may well be able to signpost you to the correct area. I had to register PoA for my mum at the same time as reporting my dad's death and found some could do both.

For government stuff I had to do it all by phone (was invoking both parents’ LPAs last year) each time I generated the relevant code and gave it over the phone.

They wanted the code basically at the start of the call in a lot of cases and then checked it right away - at that point I could then do whatever I needed to by phone normally.

lots of the utility and bank businesses were also v easy to deal with by phone. A number of them either had LPA as an option when you called or once you’d explained what you needed put you through to a specialist team who were always super helpful.

As i understand it you give the bank or whatever organisation the access code. This then enables them to go on gov.uk and see that your relative has set you up as their attorney.

The code only lasts a month , after which you would have to generate another code.

Thank you everyone for the help, I have no doubt I will make very good use of all the information.

DWP are currently refusing to deal with my complaint about PoA.

I have an old PoA wrote to them last year and they registered the other attorney (the one with a penis) not me. Our names aren't remotely similar and my letter was very clear to register me - it was a fuck up at their end.

I have since written to complain, then to escalate the complaint and finally a third time via recorded delivery. My MP is involved. You can't escalate a complaint to the ombudsman until their internal process has finished. I can't even get the internal process to start!

So i hope you have better luck than me. Meanwhile they won't talk to me abut the AA being paid and penis holding PoA is far too busy to phone them so money is accruing that will need to be paid back as our elderly person is no longer eligible for AA. Big fucking sigh.

(For clarity I do actually get on with my fellow PoA, I'm just a big sick of the "my job is so important" line that keeps being pulled. My own job isn't exactly a walk in the park either).
