Elderly parents

Moving a 90-year-old parent to a care home in another area. Any experiences?

Has anyone experience of moving an elderly (90 yr old) parent to a care home in a different NHS area? In this case from England to Wales. They are finding it harder to manage in their own home in even with carers and it is looking like we may need to consider care homes. It would help to have them closer to me as I am an only one. .
They would be able to self fund initially but when the money runs out how does it work?

Any thoughts or things to think about welcome.

I moved my mum near me which was a different local authority. She was self funding, I sold her house to pay for care but as far as I’m aware the new local authority would have had to take over when she ran out of money as that was her permanent residence. It became her only address, she was registered under a new local GP and when the time came that she unfortunately needed a DOL order, it was the new LA that sorted it.

It may be different if she still owns property and pays council tax in her old LA but I think the place she actually resides FT would have to fund the care.

Do look into care annuities depending on her house value.

Thanks.
I’ve looked at these. Eye wateringly expensive!!

it would take all their money including selling the house to buy one so I think I’ll have to pay as we go.

Good to hear it worked out for you.

I moved my mother from her home in London to a care home near me in another county. She was initially self funding, but after several years her funds ran out and my local authority took over the funding with no problem. I thought there might be issues, but there never were.

I don't know how it works in Wales, but in England when she's self funding in the care home she can claim Attendance Allowance, which is really worth having. When she moves to LA funding, you need to cancel it.

Thanks @catofglory
im going to speak to the care home in wales. It sounds easier than I thought it was going to be. 😊

We moved my mother to a care home near me, 60 miles from her home. There was no problem with GP/NHS.

She was self funded, if that makes a difference.
I can’t say she settled easily, but it would have been exactly the same half a mile from her former home - her dementia was pretty advanced by then.

Loved the place we viewed in Wales. As @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER and @catofglory said it seems easy as they are self funding.
Just need to persuade my parent now.
wish me luck!! 😆
