Dementia Care complex needs life long learning disability

Do people find live in care works when dementia advances or do separate day/night carers become inevitable? I’m worried live in carers are becoming stressed and wondering when I should re look at current arrangements. Difficulty is current carers are well known and familiar. Separate day/night care would reduce their remuneration and we may lose them perhaps. Relative has over past month become uncooperative with personal care, screaming/shouting regularly etc. physical causes been ruled out by GP eg UTI. Thx

Have you discussed with the current carers what solution they think would work best? Don't assume that you will definitely lose them if you change the dynamics, especially if your DP is being difficult. But if you do lose them, it's not the end of the world, as your DP will adjust to someone new, especially if their dementia is progressing and they are having difficult recognising people.

For us, the need for 24hr care was the tipping point where we would have needed teams of carers and so a care home situation became the only possible solution.

it’s tough but after an initial settling period worked really well.

It worked for us but my dad was cooperative - actually he mostly slept. I think you should talk to them - see what they think but also talk about what strategies theyre using to avoid conflict. My dad became very adverse to showering but would tolerate strip washing for example. And maybe also start looking for a care home so you have a back up plan.

If they are becoming stressed o would talk to them. If your relative is becoming that distressed have they been seen by a CPN? They might be able to offer medication which will help them to settle.

If it wax me though I’d be looking first at medication then at a Care Home.
