Until this happened she’s been very independent and active. She’s in hospital and they have said 5 to 6 days bedrest then home (not UK). To make it worse she was visiting her sister and is 400 miles away from her house 🙈- when will she be able to travel? What support will/might she need, and for how long? My head is spinning with it all, I‘m in a different country to her and can’t work out what to prepare for. I know I need to wait and see but would be grateful for experiences!

My 83 year old mum fell on 25/1 and fractured her pubic rami. It's a very painful fracture. She was in hospital for a couple of weeks as she couldn't stand due to pain.
Shes been home for a few weeks and is improving daily. She can't manage the stairs or have a shower but is self caring otherwise.
Shes mobile with a zimmer frame and uses a perching stool in kitchen.
Ive been told that she will eventually regain most of her independence if she doesn't try to rush her recovery

I think this will depend on her pain levels and severity of fracture. At the hospital I work in, a fractured pubic rami, they are given analgesia and encouraged to mobilise within their pain tolerance almost immediately. I would ask the hospital for more information and be led by them. I would have thought travel will be okay once she is mobilising. Can she go back to her sister's for a while to recuperate before heading home. It would be good for her to have someone else around for a couple of weeks on discharge and ascertain whether she can return home independently or need some care support for a while. The fact that she was fit and well before the accident will stand her in good stead.

Unfortunately her sister is in worse state than her so not really suited to looking after her 🙈but hopefully transport might be possible then!

I have worked with many elderly people who have # public rami. It is a very painful fracture. Once mobile walking helps. Most fully recover
In my area she would be entitled to up to 6 weeks support input at home to work with her to regain independence. A therapist would start practicing the stairs with her starting with stepping up and down the bottom stair. Once she is stronger you could do this with her as long as she has good banister rails
If needed she would progress to a community therapy team to do work with her on mobility
Find out what your area offers

She will probably need some reablement after that type of injury in a step down facility geared up for that type of care. Physio and OT particularly. Don’t step in let the hospital organise it. They generally try to get family members involved and many women particularly seem to feel completely responsible which often gets played upon so you have to be firm with them.
