Elderly parents

Help. What to take into hospital?

An elderly relative of mine had a fall outside of the home yesterday and was taken into hospital.
The hospital have advised that they will be keeping them in for the next few days.
This is a distant relative who has no immediate family therefore I want to visit and take some personal items in for them as they won't have anything.
I will take some pj's, the relative has false teeth so will pick up some cleaner, shower gel, Deodorant and I'll take some magazines and a newspaper.
Is there anything obvious I'm missing?
It's a 4 hour round trip for me which I will be completing in between school runs so I dont have time to go anywhere other than Tesco on the way.
Thank you

Do they have a phone? Charger/power bank?

Dearg · 19/02/2026 08:45

A simple moisturiser / hand cream and a lip balm . Hospitals can be very dry.

Bed socks or some sticky slipper socks?

Charger is good as is a pen. How about tissues and some squash?

Are you collecting items from their home or just buying it all from tescos?

I too was going to say lip gloss/chap stick
Eye mask and ear plugs
Bag of sweets/chocs
Stable based slippers
Dressing gown

Earplugs and eye mask. Cartons of juice and cereal bars. Wipes. Lip salve. Toothbrush and undies. Comb.

Take some casual clothing and free underwear. Nothing worse than sitting around in pjs if they can dress and mobilise. Also slippers/slip on shoes. Small towel.

Moisturiser and lip balm for sure, hospitals dry your skin out something rotten.

Those pots of prepared fruit - melon, pineapple etc - from the supermarket are usually a good shout as well. Hospital food is pretty grim and I always end up craving a bit of something fresh.

Don’t take a nightie as most hospital prefer their gowns for easy access to patient . I would take a bed jacket or soft cardigan instead and some slippers

Take wipes rather than shower gel as she will be too unstable to use the shower. A soft towel as well.

Thank you so much for your replies. I can't call into their home as it would add another hour onto my journey so I'm just buying everything on my way. I've got a good list now though so thanks again.

Maybe tracksuit bottoms and a jumper/cardigan that they can wear home?

CelticSilver · 19/02/2026 09:46

Comb and mirror. Wet wipes.

Change

Change

I would have said that till a couple of years ago. Then my DUncle had his change stolen avd my DM was later in flr 3 weeks and didn’t need any money. The trollies and newspapers seem to be a thing of the past.

As a nurse it's great if people have plenty of loose fitting, comfortable clothes that are easy to get on and off. It's much better for people to keep in the routine of getting dressed each day than being in pyjamas or a hospital gown. Also a pair of proper shoes or trainers as physios will often want them for their assessments and they will want them for when they get discharged.

I agree about the nightie. My wife was in hospital for a few months, (she is 78) and I took in pajamas which were hardly used as it was far easier for her, amd the staf, to use a hospital gown. In this case how would nighties etc get laundered? .
