Bicarb of soda is good for smells, sprinkle all over, leave a while then hoover up.

Bicarbonate and some essential oils. I use eucalyptus a lot around the house.

What a deeply unpleasant thread.

Why? It is a scientific fact that some older people give off a distinct smell. The replies have been respectful!

What’s the type and colour of the fabric? Apart from leather, you should be able to sprinkle with bicarb and leave for a while and then hoover. Add drops of eucalyptus oil afterwards to keep it smelling fresh.
Assuming you can’t wash the covers in the machine.

The first post here is from August last year and is by the OP of this thread asking a very similar question?

You didn't engage with the people who responded last time OP.

Arregaithel · 26/10/2025 20:29

@Garamousalata & @Morningsleepin

it is indeed a scientific fact.

It's due to 2-nonenal, an unsaturated aldehyde which is known as the cause of the "old person smell" or aging odour.

It is not personal to the elderly, purely nature.

Garamousalata · 26/10/2025 20:46

Mumsnet HQ appear to agree. There are ways of discussing such things. The original title was, as I said, deeply unpleasant.

Arregaithel · 26/10/2025 20:54

@Garamousalata I've obviously missed the offending title.
