Gas boiler safety

My dad is 80, very independent and very very very stubborn. Last December his gas boiler (40 + years old) stopped working. Eventually got it fixed but told not to use by the gas engineer due to high co2 (carbon dioxide) emissions. He is refusing to get a new boiler as the next people who have the house will replace it. Spoke to him earlier and he said we need to agree to disagree on the topic. I said no its dangerous and needs replacing......i really could scream right now.
He has a wood burner in the front room but the rest of the house is absolutely freezing 🥶......
Apologies for the rant but dear god I could scream

He needs to have a working carbon dioxide sensor if he is dumb enough to risk his life by not following the advice he has had.

I’m not sure where you are in the country but have you checked with his local council to see if there are any schemes available to replace the boiler for him? His age and the fact it’s unsafe should help.

SpackelFrog · 22/09/2025 22:48

If it’s leaking carbon dioxide I would put a call into the gas company who will cap off the gas supply so it can’t be used.

On the plus side, a new boiler is an excellent Christmas gift for the cantankerous octogenarian who has everything 😂

If it was fixed why has the engineer condemned it? That’s not much of a repair, unless it wasn’t installed correctly in the first place.

Surely a carbon monoxide alarm is what he needs? Is he perhaps worried he can't afford to replace the boiler?

Pepperedpickles · 22/09/2025 22:54

You need to report it to Cadent and they will cap it off. I’m sorry but things like this make me so angry. Any of us could be living next to him and he could cause a huge explosion killing not only himself but his neighbours- and that’s if gas is leaking. If it’s carbon monoxide that’s equally just as worrying.

@MemorableTrenchcoat it wasn't condemned according to my dad. Just not to use because of the high carbon dioxide..... can't see any difference myself but.... going to try and contact the gas engineer for advice

Thank you all for the good advice. I will contact the gas engineer and also see if my dad can get any help. Also I might have got the two carbon things mixed up.... apologies!!!
