NHS app for elderly parent

Has anyone set up the NHS app on their phone for their elderly parent?

I have just had a very frustrating call with the NHS hospital where I was supposed to take Mum on Thursday (for an appointment that's been in her calendar for months), who have told me the appointment has been postponed until end of November. I rescheduled a holiday in order to be able to take her to this appointment.

They claimed a letter was sent to her on 3rd Sept rearranging the appointment. To my knowledge she hasn't received it.

If I set the app up for her presumably all this would be recorded there and I could check it saving the worry of letters going astray? Mum has memory issues so ....

But I also have my own NHS app, so how does that work?

Feeling at the end of my tether today and grateful for any advice. I live an hour away from them so try and see them once a week.

At first glance you have to be registered at the same GP surgery to get access to the app for someone else. I’m guessing you’re probably not.

Infuriating for you, I’m so sorry.

Could you redirect her post to you? Pretty extreme but she could consider it?

It is possible to add access for your Mum via the NHS App (known as proxy access) - but you both need to be at the same practice.

That, of course, assumes the hospital are sending out appointment details via the App. Which they may not be yet. However they should be able to email appointment details, but you might need to get the hospital to change contact preferences.

I have 2 separate log ins for the app, one for me with my kids associated with my account and one for my husband as I manage his meds and appointments along with the kids. However it’s a pain in the arse as when I use his log ins (his email address as the username) he gets a code to his mobile that I need to log in and there is no way round that. So I don’t know if you can have 2 separate log ins using the same mobile number for verification. And if you’re swapping between your account and your mums it will send the code every time (if you just use it for your own account it only needs the verification every now and again it seems). And

Just log in to the web version using your mum's details. So you'd need her email and password. That's what I do. Nb With my mum's permission as she's a bit of a technophobe.

The web version normally needs 2 part confirmation to log in. My hospital appointments do not appear on the app at all, sometimes the results are available after they have been sent to the gp practice and scanned, but not always.

If her mum hasn’t ever set it up before OP can just set 2 facter authentication to go to her phone number. It’s not hard to just set it up as though OP was her mum.

Thanks I’ll do this. I didn’t know there was a web version of the app.

NHS letters are notorious for going astray or late , many are processed abroad or never get posted. A recent hospital appointment letter I received by post has never appeared on my NHS app or the hospital system. You would need a separate email address to set up an account for your mum and it may randomly request 2f authentication.

I wouldn’t count on the appointments to show in the app.
