DM going downhill fast but blood tests & investigations are coming up with nothing…

Mini712 · 26/08/2025 19:34

In the last 6 months my 79 year old DM has gone from being reasonable well to now hardly eating, breathless and lethargic. She finds it difficult to stand or walk for more than a couple of minutes. She spends all day on the sofa & is sleeping a lot. She is also very disengaged with anything or anyone. 81 year old DF is now having to do all the chores and is struggling.

DM has had blood tests, a CT scan, colonoscopy & various heart scans but nothing life threatening has been discovered. She has atrial fibrillation & leaky heart valves but she has had this for years & the cardiologist says her condition is being well managed and her heart isn’t that bad.

Good news that nothing sinister has been found but where do we go from here? She is literally wasting away before our eyes.

I have also noticed that she has memory issues and may have early dementia.

Any advice would be much appreciated❤️.

My relative had similar symptoms- no appetite and very little energy and after a fair few months of investigations it was found to be leukaemia. He then had treatment for a another few months but it was sadly unsuccessful and he passed away.

If at all possible I would push your father into getting a cleaner and gardener now. My father is my mother’s carer and he is now absolutely exhausted and beginning to get unwell himself. My mum has been like yours for years now. It’s awful and I’m sorry you are going through this.
I found listening to Kathryn Mannix very insightful.

Would second reading Kathryn Mannix, her books got me through my Dad's last months in relative sanity.

@roobyred & @MrsLizzieDarcy thank you for the recommendation ❤️

Mum passed away peacefully yesterday in ICU.
Although Mum didn’t get a formal diagnosis, the Neurologist believed that Mum was in the final stages of respiratory Motor Neurone Disease.
Hopefully, this information might help someone reading this thread in the future.

@sidge so what is the cut off age where we should stop pushing for diagnosis & treatment? Should we just withdraw all medical treatment when people get to eg 80?!

If that’s what they want. OP is describing pretty much what happened with a very close friend’s mum. She was older but had just had enough and was ready, told my friend so several times and passed quietly, 2 weeks or so later.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/11/2025 15:54

Sorry for your loss X

I'm sorry for your loss. It must have been hard to watch her decline and not have any answers, well at least until it was too late. I feel like people get written off medically after a certain age.

I found some of the replies on this thread depressing. Yes, 79 is old, but many people of this age and older are living well and enjoying life. The idea you should accept a loved has just got old and probably going to die soon is a bit sad. I could understand many of the replies if the OP mum had been 89.

Sorry for your loss OP, sounds like something pretty catastrophic which was undiagnosed, medicine isn’t an exact science. But answers always make it easier to accept. Thinking of you.

Have you explored alternative medicine? Remedies in Ayurveda or Chinese medicine are very good for strength gain, increasing energy, and other mild symptoms. It is not a replacement for any tablets etc. but supplementary with no side effects.

Please don't start these types of supplements without consulting a doctor. They can interact with other medications, impact kidney or liver function and skew blood results.

I'm so sorry for your loss OP. Take care of yourself Flowers

My FIL had rapid weight loss, severe back pain which made him virtually bed-ridden . After a very worrisome few months, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and doing much better now that’s he’s on the correct medication. He didn’t have any neurological symptoms, just weight loss and back pain. Have they considered Parkinson’s?
