LPA for finance- are there any banks that aren't useless?

DSis and I have financial LPA for mum. Her account is with barclays. We had to spend 1 1/2 hours in branch registering the LPA's. We were told that it was all sorted, but we can't use the app to manage her money (why??).

Basic stuff was ok but when we wanted to put some of her money in a bond, the website wouldn't let me do it. After hours on the phone, we had to go into branch again (another hour). They said the reason it hadn't worked was that they hadn't listed her town of birth.

i wanted to put some of her money in an ISA and, surprise, I can't do that online. Mum wanted to send some money to a DGC who is buying a house, and that won't go through either. They are looking at things and will probably call me, but nothing. I'm done with them.

Does anyone have any better experiences?

Sorry to jump on someone else’s thread but I have just gained POA for my DF (jointly with DSis). He still has capacity. Should I be registering the LPA with all his banks etc. now or do I wait until he lacks capacity?

The thing about capacity is that it can fluctuate, and it differs from having insight into one's condition.

If I recall correctly, the two banks I dealt with asked if the donor still had capacity but both also asked separately whether she should continue to have her own access. It took weeks to sort out for me; bearing in mind that it's not an all-or-nothing thing, I'd get on with registering it now.

@NoMumLeftBehindLizwhat does the LPA say? Is it set up to do it now, or do they have to have lost capacity?

ExcellentDesign · 20/08/2025 16:47

Yes Lloyds asked me if they still had capacity and were going to continue using the accounts themselves, so they will keep their cards and chequebook and get paper statements (they never did online) and I will use online and my own card.

Set up to do it now @ThatCyanSheep

I did it myself so no solicitor involved @ExcellentDesign. Am hoping that means my copies are counted as Certified Copies or I can use the OPG generated code as mentioned upthread.

Thanks all!

Okay, I’d get them registered now, so long as the donee agrees.

codes should be good - if not, you need to get a certified copy. It needs to be signed by a solicitor/the post office. But the codes are designed to prevent the need for a certified copy

ExcellentDesign · 20/08/2025 16:58

Yes, whatever you need to do, do it now. The process for registering and getting the codes takes a while as you set up an account online but then they have to send you codes in the post to actually connect you to the LPAs and only then can you get the LPA codes.

My parents set up the LPAs a decade ago, but I only started acting as attorney about 18 months ago when things started to get harder for them to manage. They both still have capacity.

HSBC were ok with me registering finance LPA. made an appointment, which took about an hour. just needed my ID. it possibly helped that i still had an open account with them (not used it in 25 years mind). i can use the app to pay bills and got given a bank card to use for purchases. Given all the crap I've sorted, have to say HSBC were the easiest to deal with!

The registering is rhe easiest bit. It's rhe using that can get tricky.
