Urine smells

My parents' bathroom is carpeted. Naturally there's been a problem around the loo. I binned the pedestal mat and hired a carpet washer to clean the carpet, but can't properly get at the very base of the pedestal. I've been looking at all sorts of sprays for dealing with the residual smell, but have no idea which actually works. I'm not bothered if the treatment discolours the carpet but I don't want one which just chucks fragrance at the problem.

Can anyone recommend a spray that will work on urine soaked into the edge of the carpet?

And, no, before anyone asks, they will categorically not get rid of the carpet.

Maybe try one of the urine enzyme cleaners designed for pets, I’m not sure there is one for humans, but it should work.

Yup, start off with some Simple Solution.

Then you can get some hydrogen peroxide solution, soak the area with that, top off (as best you can) with towels (white or at least so old the colour won't bleed) weighed down with books or something else heavy.

Steam cleaning can also help.

Can also dissolve some bio washing powder/liquid in water, work into stain, blot up with cloths/towels, then plain water, blot, cycle through until you're fed up or it seems clean.

What is Simple Solution? Is that a brand name, or a mixture?

Would replacing the carpet with vinyl make your parents feel undermined? If not, I’d do that. Unless the bathroom is large, most bathrooms can have new flooring put down from an offcut for barely more than what you’d pay for the chemicals. I’ve done two bathrooms recently for less than £20 each.

However, brushing bicarbonate of soda into the carpet and letting it dry before vacuuming it out can also help.

Aldi cheap antibacterial spray did a really good job on a similar situation for me. It was used out of desperation.

The key is to absolutely soak the carpet. I literally took the top off the bottle and poured the whole lot on. When it dried it didn't smell anymore.

@ButSpringDidNotKnow brand name. Try Pets At Home if you can't find it in a supermarket. It's marketed at pet owners but my wee never smelled all that different from the dogs' , so I expect it would work for people pee too.
