Cost of care

Just wondering what people are being charged for visits from carers, my mum is self financing my dad’s care, and we are just working out and whether the cost is realistic. I’ve seen online the av cost per hour can be between £15-£30 an hour. She is currently paying roughly £40 a visit. Does this seem to align with other’s experiences?

My mum pays £34 per hour weekdays and £35 weekends.

Thanks, is that for one or two carers?

That’s for just one carer and for one hour (which includes the admin time so around 45 minutes care of my dad).

About £50 per visit for two(double for weekends and bh)

Ah that’s interesting, mum pays £40 for two carers three times a day, each visit lasting about 20 minutes, but they don’t seem to have weekend increase

I think one of the issues with shorter visits is travel time. Carers are paid for whole shift these days so even if you have to consider a ten minute travel on either side of the appointment then you pay for 40 minutes plus mileage. A relative moved into a retirement flat and actually care got cheaper as just walking between flats so the agency offers a discounted rate.

Im rural and it’s really hard to get carers locally. A friend works for the rehabilitation team ( council carers who come after release from hospital to help you regain skills needed to be independent) she spends over half of her 12 hour shift driving around.

Mine pays £34 per hour, £28.25 for 45mins, £1 more for weekends.
Home counties.

Typically the higher the fee the better paid the carers are which isn't always linked to level of care but to an extent must be.

You can also reduce the cost by not paying the overheads/admin fees of agencies and going direct to carer.

Sites like https://lottie.org/home-care/ will show you providers in your area and their starting prices so you can compare and also offer direct to carer options which can take it from ~£35+ to ~£20+ you just then have to manage the employmeny of hte carer yourselves.
