My fil has dementia and is in a care home, and I am looking for ideas for an appropriate father’s day gift for him.

I’m obviously mindful of items going walkabout, etc.
All suggestions gratefully appreciated.

How about a blanket with photos on.

What are his interests, would he look after a plant in his room.

Depends on how far advanced his dementia is.

My Mum wanted sweet things so we bought her sweets etc.

She also kept asking where her babies were - we were all middle aged, so I bought her a doll to look after and she loved that.

I also made a family tree and included pictures with descriptions of who the person was and their relation to Mum and she enjoyed sharing that with the staff at the home.

She missed her parents who had died many years before so I also got pictures of them from my Uncle and put them in a lovely frame for her room.

She also liked a radio on so one of the first things bought was a radio.

These are just a few things that I got my Mum who was in a home with dementia.

Thank you very much for your reply, and suggestions.

Once upon a time i think he would have enjoyed a plant, but i think he’s probably at the moderate stage, i’d say.

He definitely has a sweet tooth, bless him, so that’s a good idea.

Did you buy a specific radio?

No specific radio, just a cheap easy to use one that plugged in, it really helped her be calm when near the end and she was bed bound.

Do you have any old family pictures, like the ones of his parents or grandparents, etc? You can make a photo book with these photos with short descriptions about who is in the picture and what year is it and then continue to the present day photos of his own family, maybe his friends, you and your famile, etc. Older photos, especially the black and white ones or the blurry/faded ones, could be digitized and colorized, here is a good article on fixing old photos in general. If you digitize and reprint them, then the originals would stay untouched and you father gets a newer version.
