Elderly parents

Sheltered housing- what do we need?

My elderly mother is shortly moving into sheltered accommodation after living with me for 10 years.
It is the best move for everone, and is a lovely complex, my mother already knows quite a few people who live there.

But it is unfurnished, and my mother has no furniture of her own- and is on a tight budget.
A local furniture initiative has already delivered a fridge freezer, brand new microwave, toaster, kettle crockery and cutlery, a sofa and recliner, one small table and a lamp.
I would like to make the place functional and homely before she moves in, but not sure exactly what she will need.
Can anyone point me to a list of items- she has been offered a grant to get the place equipped, but I/she needs to send a list of exact requirements. This may be a one off grant, so I would like to get it right.

It would be really helpful to have a check list to focus on the essentials- anyone know of such a list?

Thanks

Watching this thread with interest as I am in a similar situation, but for myself. I am disabled, approaching 62 years of age,and am struggling with day to day life. I live in a 2 bedroom second floor flat and the stairs are becoming an issue, plus I am 'over bedroomed' in the eyes of the council,so am looking to downsize in the not to distant future to a sheltered housing,or assisted living complex. Trying to get my head around what I need to get for a new place is dominating my thoughts at the moment!

AlteredStater · 19/05/2025 17:51

Check whether she needs blinds/curtains.
Perhaps some shelving for books, ornaments.
Wardrobe or clothes rail.
A picture or two for the walls?
Bathmat, toilet mat, towels, bathing essentials.
Will she need a washing machine? Most of these sheltered housings have them but it can be nice to have one's own if there's space.
Mobility aids if need be (e.g. rail to go round toilet to aid getting up)

We recently moved DP's mum into sheltered housing and had to furnish it but she did have her own things, it was paring it down that was tricky!

Hope your Mum will be very happy there!

Also any things she needs for any disabilities, bed rail, raised toilet seat/ frame, things to help open jars etc.

Coat hangers? We always seem short of those.

Will she be eating at home or in the restaurant? If she’ll be doing any shopping then I’d really recommend a shopping trolley.

TobiasForgesContactLense · 19/05/2025 20:06

Just trying to think of what hasn't been mentioned. Does it have a built in wardrobe? Also lamps that you turn on by touching the base rather than a fiddly switch?

BunnyRuddington · 19/05/2025 20:32

Just seen that she has a kettle. It’s a shame as the one cup ones are usually much easier for some older people.

FiniteSagacity · 20/05/2025 20:18

Does unfurnished mean she needs flooring @speakout?
That was a big expense in our experience but can be what keeps it feeling warm and reduces noise. Rugs are a trip hazard.

@Nicaveron made a good list, I’d add a mop and if there’s a wet room then get advice on the type of mop for in there.

Doesitgoto11 · 20/05/2025 22:07

You haven’t mentioned a bed yet?

Thanks for all the helpful replies.
The place does have flooring throughout- carpet in bedroom and living room.
The manager of the complex is super helpful and already delivered a kitchen pack, small items but also a micrrowave, toaster, fridge freezer and kettle- all new, plus a lightly used corner sofa and recliner chair which my mother loves- very comfortable. He has also put up curtains and blinds in every window.
I have also been in touch with the council, my mother qualifies for a community care grant, to buy new bed, cooker, television, tables, chest of drawers - cooking utensils, bedding, towels, rugs, and whatever else she needs, although there are very spacious fitted wardrobes in the bedroom and good storage throughout. The council has a really helpful checklist and although the choices are limited the council will deliver and install/build all the stuff and put it in place. That will be one of my tasks this weekend - to make lists OH and I are in our 60s - it was a daunting thought of the work we had to do and funding to pay for it.
My mother has also been invited to a furniture/homeware initiative store nearby- I spoke to the manager and have an appointment to visit with my mum next week- it isn't open to the public, we needed a referral. The manager sounds lovely, and said they have ample supplies of stuff, some new, some lightly used so mum can take her pic - everything is free and again they will deliver and install.

This thread has been really helpful, so thanks to all who responded.
I am just so blown away at the help and resources available to my mother.
The whole flat will be furnished without her spending any money at all.

I know society has its problems, the NHS is on its knees, fuel and food costs escalating, but to know these initiatives exist to help people who are facing challenges really lifts my heart and gives me hope that the world can be an amazing place.
I am brimming over with gratitude right now,

How big is her space? A Studio will need different things to a flat.

The minimum I would say is

Something to sleep on, something to sit on, something to eat from (table or tray)

Sorry I have just seen your update.

Where in the country are you? I'm in the Midlands and Severn Trent water (of all organisations) supply beds and white goods to people in need.

minnienono · 23/05/2025 07:58

Bed, bedside table, chest of drawers, wardrobe (if not built in), bedside lamp, storage in bathroom (check space), tv and storage unit, radio, book case for books and trinkets, lightweight vacuum, long handled dustpan and brush, mop and bucket

LongRangeDessertGroup · 23/05/2025 08:03

Is there a local area Facebook page? Ours is full of super-helpful people who are happy to donate items they no longer need. Good luck to your mum, hope she is happy in her new home, and you’re a star for having her live with you for 10 years.

BunnyRuddington · 23/05/2025 08:19

Lovely update OP and you are indeed amazing having her live with you for so long. It’s not something that I could have done Flowers

amooseymoomum · 23/05/2025 08:34
