Urgent catheter query!

My dad is just out of hospital with a catheter and a breakdown in communication has left him with no night bags. They are apparently on order but no timescale given.

Does anyone know if the nozzle receiver bit is a standard size? I can get some off Amazon delivered tomorrow but I’m clueless! I’m also hundreds of miles away..

Thanks in anticipation.

Phone the district nurse they may have an emergency supply

Thanks but tried that. Also someone from their GP was supposed to call me and hasn’t 🤷‍♀️

Does he wake throughout the night, and is he able to empty the basic bag himself? Or is there someone with him who could do it for him? If so, he’d be all right for the night, although far from ideal.

doglikescheeseontoast · 23/04/2025 18:04

Or call the ward he was discharged from? Sorry for all the questions - I’ve recently worked in reablement and this was something we saw a lot.

ScaryM0nster · 23/04/2025 18:08

Standard within the brand - might be more standard than that.

If it gets full, it’ll back ip
into his bladder and feel like needs a wee, so that’s the no night bag scenario.

Try phoning local care homes to him, one may well be happy to give him a night bag.

Pharmacys are often really helpful on this stuff.

As are district nurses.

Or the urology ward at the local hospital. Or Elderly care ward a local hospital. Although they probably use ones with frames and ideally you need a stand.

Disscombobulated · 23/04/2025 18:25

Yes, standard fitting - where (roughly) are you?

Disscombobulated · 23/04/2025 18:27

Yes, standard fitting - where (roughly) are you?

sorry - I see you are miles away from him, where (roughly) is he? If it’s anywhere near me, I can help.

Thanks @Disscombobulated!

He can’t empty it himself so my mum is getting up twice a night to help him. Now on day 4 of that. Tried the ward too, that was a round in circles nightmare.

when we were in a similar situation our local drs pharmacy was able to order some on next day delivery. Otherwise you could contact Colorplast https://www.coloplast.co.uk/

who may well have a stoma nurse in your area with a supply, or will be able to have the GP prescribe electronically and then send out.

best wishes for his speedy recovery, having just been through this please do contact me if you have any questions I might be able to help with.

I think they will fit ok. You should register with Coloplast Charter, but I'm afraid your first order will take about a week to arrive. Where in the country are you?

ScaryM0nster · 23/04/2025 19:01

I’m guessing he came home from a geriatric ward?

The urology ward will be far more used to discharging mobile, independent patients - and tend to have discharge sets with night bags, stands etc.

MoreHairyThanScary · 23/04/2025 19:04

yes you can definitely use different night bags with different branded day bags. Has he been told how to care for his catheter and when and where it needs to be be changed?

Something like the above should fit most leg bags

IHateRain76 · 23/04/2025 19:14

Has he nurses coming out to change his catheter? If you Mum is OK emptying it during the night? If so it will be OK, if it gets too full it will cause excruciating pain. As pp have said the Colonplast order may take a few days. Can your Mum get to the hospital or local care home tomorrow? She will need a stand as well to hook the bag onto. I hope he is recovering well, bar this. Possibly 111 or GP tomorrow as you can't have you Mum up several times in the night. Has he a care package in place?

Foodylicious · 23/04/2025 19:23

Where (ish) in the country is your Dad?
