Nametags for Carehomes?

Can anyone recommend a company that does nametages for someone going into a Care Home?

It’s been a few years since I’ve done this and last time I just used the company that I’d used when the DC started school. Not sure how they fair in the hot washes and tumble driers used in a care home though.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I used the supplier for school name tags and ironed them in. I'm not sure how long they'll last with tumble drying, though. Laundry pen is also ok. My DF isn't bothered about clothes these days.

We use snappy tags. Little plastic discs. These are what the home requested and they seem to last well.

My MIL's care home does this for her. When she moved in they tagged all of her clothes, and now we just give any new clothes to reception.

Given the eye-watering fees, I certainly don't expect to have to stitch in name labels.

Don’t use stick on ones like Stickins. I use them for my kids clothes and they are still stuck fast. I put them on my parent’s clothes when they moved into a care home for respite and they came off after ONE wash! Everything is boiled in care homes so they are much more likely to come off.

Also, buy way more than you think you’ll need as EVERYTHING needs labelling. I did lots of things twice in case one thing came off.

Stick on ones may not last on clothing, but they're great for loads of other things that need labels - shoes, TV remotes, etc Anything small enough to pick up needs a label.

We used https://www.wovenlabelsuk.com/care-home-labels/ who also do ones specifically for the arms of glasses.

I used Cash’s for DM, and yes, it’s a PITA to stitch them all in, but they do survive all the washing. I didn’t think to name the belt of her dressing gown, so that went missing, never to be seen again, so I had to buy another DG.
If there are residents with dementia, you need to mark every possession because things can and do ‘go walkabout’ and if things aren’t named nobody will know which room to return them to.

Actually, things not small enough to easily pick up also need labels. Wheelchairs, walkers, label the lot.

Sorry I should have mentioned that I can’t sew!

Thanks for that recommendation. I’ve not heard of these before and they sound like a good solution.

I used snappy tags for my dm. I keep all the kit in her room and it's one of the things I do if needed when I visit.

I used school iron in lables, but socks were a problem. I found some on amazon that embroidered dads name on. Lost dad in 2018, but I've kept his socks!

LetMeGoogleThat · 14/04/2025 16:02

I also kept a sharpie in his room to write on anything that could go for a wander.

Clothing goes through a lot of boil washes in homes. I worked in one and if there are any bodily fluids on clothes or sheets, happens a lot with incontinent adults, they are all bagged laundry puts them in the machine bag and all for a sluice wash. The bag strip dissolves in the wash and then there’s a series of boil rinses / detergent cycles to remove everything.

Sew in labels are best, for socks I’d recommend ones with a coloured base and then just stitch room number or initials. The number of unmarked plain black socks I had to guess my way through. Also those tight type socks that can’t be labelled are a pita.

Get the care home to label ALL the residents clothing as they see fit.
The washing/ drying facilities in care homes are brutal so don’t send in clothing that is delicate or expensive or needs ironing as it will be totally ruined and your relative will soon look like a disheveled tramp.
Clothing quite often ends up in other residents rooms and I’ve even seen other residents wearing my relatives clothing. This is quite common in homes that have a high level of staff for whom English, both spoken and written, is not their first language.

I do not sew, so I used iron-on name tapes for my mother. I usually ironed them onto the clothing brand label at neck or waist, as they stuck better there. My mother was in a care home for many years and the labels survived the hot washes without a problem. These were the ones I used (sorry about ugly link)

The only time I sewed the labels on rather than ironing was for socks where it was unavoidable.

We use Stikins, same as I use for my kids. They’re great.
