Anyone know what’s likely to happen? She’s fallen, and is in a hospital 250 miles away. They’ve said they need to pin it, will they then transport her up to our local hospital or will she stay down there until discharged? The hospital aren’t saying much, but obviously if she’s going to be down there we need to make plans. Thank you!

Is she in the UK and does she have any holiday insurance?

Hope she is OK

Trovindia · 02/04/2025 14:16

In the UK? I would expect her to stay where she is but I don't know for sure. Transfer would cost money and time so I don't think it would be the default. You could contact the hospital and ask for that to happen but the surgeon might want access to check on her.

Thank you - yes fortunately UK

My parents were involved in an RTA on holiday in the UK in recent months, both sustained fractures. They were in hospital where they were holidaying for a while, certainly until they were a bit more stable and their pain was under some degree of control. After some time, I think maybe a week to ten days, there was some talk of them being transferred to their local hospital, but then a care package was arranged and they could go home instead. So, I think the answer is, it very much depends.

I think the point is if she has holiday insurance she could pay for a private ambulance to a local hospital.

This happened to my aunt. She fell and broke her hip when visiting us. She lives 40 miles away. She stayed in hospital for several weeks until discharged back home via hospital transport, with with physiotherapy and home helps visiting 2-3x a day. You probably won't get the latter if you look like you are in any way able to take on that burden. In fact, my aunt told us not to visit so that she got that help.

The hospital she’s at will liaise with her local OT and physio.

If she needs transfer to her local hospital? They hospital will arrange it.

The plan will be to repatriate her to her GP area as soon as possible - but possible means she has to be stable enough for the journey. It might be to a rehab service but the acute hospital will more likely want to transfer to another acute hospital.

Thank you all - she was repatriated by ambulance back home and a care plan put in place.

Why would she have holiday insurance in the uk? I'm really glad it was all sorted and hope she makes a good recovery.

PetraPetunia · 18/04/2025 09:04

Thank you - @TorroFerney, she’s doing well, back at her local hospital next week for a review. Thank you for thinking of her.
