Can someone help me with what I need to do, or make sure someone else does

My dad died on Wednesday.

I know there is a list of things that must happen and an order in which to do them but I cannot find the mental energy to work it out myself.

My mum is still alive and he left everything to her apart from his half of the house which he left to me and my siblings.

Does anyone have a comprehensive "do this" list please.

@SilverBlue56 I’m sorry for your loss. A good place to start is the Tell us once government service, which helps with both local government (like council tax) and government (state pension and benefits).
Just do one thing at a time so you can feel the relief of having done something. You don’t have to do it all at once.

Sorry for your loss. It sounds as though your dad set up a life interest trust in his will, so that you’ll receive his share only after your mum’s death, and if so, the executors need to register the trust with HMRC and the Land Registry.

Thank you all

There is one thing with a deadline - registering the death. Exact process for that will depend on whether he died at home, in a care home or in hospital. https://www.gov.uk/register-a-death

When you register, you will be given the info for the Tell Us Once service. This informs all the various government departments - state pension, any benefits like attendance allowance etc. You will also be given the green form you need for the undertaker to start their part of the process.

The rest you can take your time over. I suggest you get the funeral organised before you look at the rest of the to do list.

If your father had his money in his own name it may not be released until probate has been granted (depending on amount), but the bank will have a process for releasing money to pay for the the funeral. Speak to the bank's bereavement team. They will also be able to give you details of the financial services equivalent of Tell Us Once (sorry, can't remember the name) which let's you inform most banks, insurance companies, pension companies etc all in one go.
