Elderly parents

Care at home in Scotland...

I have an elderly relative currently in hospital. She has been fit for discharge for several weeks now, however can't be discharged until her care at home package is put back in place (she had care at home pre-admission, however they don't pause packages, they cancel them!).
She had visits from two carers for 30 minutes four times daily, and she's returning to the same package. She's in Scotland, is there anyone with knowledge/similar experience who could give a rough idea of wait times?
Care at home are refusing to give us even an estimate. Her mood is getting lower and lower - it's a heart breaking (and inhumane, frankly 🤬) circumstance.

It massively depends on area. One of ours - 24-48 hours notice, the neighbouring council: 3-4 months!!
its a minefield.
the best person to advise might be social work or discharge coordinator at the hospital/ward she’s in.

FIL in Edinburgh was pretty quick. The hospital was very keen to get him out. SIL refused to take on all his care if they discharged him without it being in place, I think it took 2-3 days to set up urgent temporary care at home by hospital team, then the local authority took over for 2-3 weeks to monitor and asses, then agency carers have now taken over for the longer term.

You could ask if they have any STAR beds locally? That’s like a mid way between hospita and Home- in care homes they have set up beds or small en suite rooms where people get some care but some independence between being discharged and getting home. Sometimes used to assess the level of care package needed.

Contact Adult social care in your area.
They can do a care assessment. But bare in mind that with the chronic shortage of carers your relative may have to consider a care home.

Thanks for the replies, some helpful advice 😊
She's been assessed @SweetMagnolia423, care package approved and requested. It's been 5 weeks now she's been on the waiting list, care at home just saying their rotas are full...

I understand that a care package has been approved but your relative may still end up going into a care home. I had a similar situation, my relative had a fall at home, was taken to hospital and then social worker put together a care package for him to be able to stay at home. But unfortunately there just wasn’t enough carers available to cover his needs and so ended up in a care home. To be honest, we were lucky to get him into the home when it came up because only once he moved in did we realise he had all the care he needed 24hrs a day. It was the better option for him.

It varies depending on local authority area.

One thing that might help is emailing one of the councillors that cover her home area. If you find the local council then use a postcode finder on the local council website you will get 3 or 4 you can phone or email. They'll help get an answer and may be able to speed up the process.

I wouldn't try all of them at once but pick one and if they don't reply promptly, go to the next one. Or ask anyone you know who lives in the area if any are particularly helpful .

It depends on local authority. Glasgow I believe is 24-48 hours. My relative was Ayrshire, x4 daily visits required but 9 weeks after she was discharged, she was still only getting x115 minute visit daily. Family did almost all the care.

I know this sounds bleak, but I wanted to be honest.
