Elderly parents

Moving to care home in different area?

Sorry, can't think how to title this thread!
Basically:
Elderly father has been in, and still rents a flat in sheltered housing.
Has been in hospital since November.
They want to discharge as nothing more medically to be done.
They have deemed he needs 24hr care in care home setting.

So far, fine. I have the phone number for his social worker and will ring her next week to try and find out more about help with funding etc.
If anyone could help me with a specific question though, I'd really appreciate it.
At the moment, he comes under one local authority ( based in Tyne and Wear).
I am his only family and live in North Yorkshire).
How problematic would it be to get his funding for care home transferred from one local authority to another? If I could move him closer to me, it would be wonderful.

For reference, he has £24 k behind him and £2k per month income. I know he will lose all his savings, no problem with that, but would that help at all?
I'm befuddled with it all, so any advice welcome 🙏

I did it with mine. I would start by checking out care homes near you as it helps to be able to say exactly where you want to move him to. Ask people you know for recommendations. Have the discussion with the local authority finance people too. It will help that they've already agreed he needs to be in a care home. This is the biggest barrier. Then it's just a case of agreeing the location.

Please remember hospital is NHS funded and ASC is funded by local authority so he will need to be assessed under the care act to receive funding once savings below threshold
does he have capacity and agree to residential?
also rules of ordinary residence will apply as the funding will not be accepted by Yorks if he has not lived there.

We moves my Faial from South Wales to Somerset.
Ho amd visit a few local ones. Ask locally for recommendations. You need to.visot a couplento.compare and realise what questions tou will want answers to.
Have a shortlisting case 1nismt available when tou want ur and present tour shortlist to social services.
I'd try and get 1 as close to you as possible. FIL is 7 minutes drive away now. It's do easy to pop in, take him out for coffee/lunch etc. He wasn't keen either at the start so being do close meant we could pop in easily every day.

He does have capacity and agrees it's the best for him, but he has never lived in North Yorkshire. He was in Northumberland, then went into sheltered housing in Tyne and Wear.
Does this mean we won't be able to get help for him to move closer to the only family he has?
I've googled myself daft this evening, but can't find this specific info🤔

It’s fine. Only issue is if the differential in price is huge ie N Yorks costs more than his local authority. If cheaper, they will be delighted. Local authorities set a rate for their area if they are funding. Moved my DM to be close to us in far cheaper area than her home and there were no problems.

Thank you so much! I'll try and find out the rates they will pay and compare.
If it is more expensive (providing its not too much), I'll pay the excess.
Just need to try and find the allowances, but that's great news, thank you!

See, this wasn't an issue for me. My dad had never lived in the area I live in but his local authority agreed to fund him moving to a care home there. So there can't be a blanket ban on it. It was with a deferred payment arrangement in place but they definitely agreed to pay a home outside their own area. I think the rates were comparable.
