Elderly parents

Where would you look for adverts

I'm in the middle of setting up a business primarily aimed at the older generation. Really struggling with how to market what I'm producing.
So if you were looking for something for your parent or they were looking for themselves where would you look?

Depends what it is you're advertising, but there seems to be a lot of older people using the local NextDoor social media app

MyDadLovedBlondieToo · 06/02/2025 19:51

Parish magazine / village newsletter would be my first port of call.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/02/2025 19:52

agree it depends what it is

but mum is 86 and not good with tech - but she'd still look online first, via Google.

Snowmanscarf · 06/02/2025 19:53

My parents look at adverts in local newspapers .

Alternatively, I would look online on their behalf.

How elderly are we talking about? Those in the seventies may be more tech savvy than those in mid eighties upwards. W

Leaflets through doors and community Facebook groups.

businessflop25 · 06/02/2025 20:38

It's a postal activity/care box service specifically for the older generation. So not a local business as such.

I'm in my 70s - I'd go to Google first, Facebook etc. never read magazines, parish newsletters etc

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/02/2025 20:45

Do you mean a sort of activities subscription, like puzzles, crafts?

I see that kind of thing advertised through Instagram / Facebook .

What you are selling might benefit elderly people but are they the people who would buy it? It's the sort of thing I might consider for my mother in law but she wouldn't think to buy it for herself.

Precisely! A significant percentage of people who buy it will be buying it for someone else.

It's just where best to target my advertising as I'm very limited in terms of budget for marketing

Leaflets in a pharmacy or at the Dr's or a post office.

They don't allow them sadly

I get lots of adverts for craft sets and puzzles on instagram - I'm guessing because their algorithms have noticed I tend to look at this kind of thing - isn't that how ads on SM work ?

I don't know if your products are for adults in general or particularly for elderly older adults, but if it's the kind of thing aimed at keeping dementia at bay in the very old, I don't think they will search these things out for themselves so you probably need to look at advertising somewhere that someone in their 50s will access, rather than an 80 year old.

Funny enough, my dad still reads the paper front to back. But when he wanted to find a physiotherapist, he asked me to “look it up on the computer.” That blend of old-school and modern is real. Something like injury lawyer marketing from Fortress really gets that balance, they’ve figured out how to market to folks who don’t live online, but still trust what they find there.
