Went to visit MIL yesterday afternoon and her house is so hot 🥵
When she went upstairs i checked the central heating control panel and it was on 25 degrees centigrade 🥵
She'd spent the first half hour after our arrival complaining that she wasn't eligible for the winter fuel payment anymore cos of her getting her husbands pension. Hubby and I were sat in our shirt sleeves.
We're both over 50, I probably run hot due to menopause and MIL if mid 80's. My own parents have their house at 19 and fin go that fine. My mum is early 80's and Dad is 90.
Just looking for others experiences. I always end up with a banging headache when I'm there.

Deafened not dead. Stupid fat thumbs!

I'd say that's normal for older people. My parents house is like a sauna 🥵

And mine! I sit there in my T-shirt. The dog loves it though, sprawled in front of the fire.

Newmum738 · 24/11/2024 11:19

@muddyford I would have to go and sit in the garden sometimes at Christmas. I was dying from the heat 😂

ForPearlViper · 24/11/2024 11:23

Firstly to the people saying it is normal for older people. You don't lose all your individualism when you pass a certain age. 'Older people' are not a heterogenous blob.

Secondly, if they are paying the bill it is their choice. If you come in from outside, the temperature will feel much warmer when you go in than if you have been sitting there all day. Can't you just wear lighter clothes and take a little electric fan?

LilacLilyBird · 24/11/2024 11:44

Skinny elderly people have no body fat so they really feel the cold

cheezncrackers · 24/11/2024 12:50

That's excessively hot, IMO, and I'm not surprised you'd get a banging headache. I put our central heating on 19 and that's perfect. I can't bear being too hot!

It is not your place to turn down her heating! If she wants it at 25c - which admittedly would be too warm for me - then that is UP TO HER. She is not a child who should be told what to do.

Err where did I say I was going to turn down her heating?!
And I have NOT TOLD HER TO TURN IT DOWN OR TOLD HER I AM TOO HOT.

Age UK recommends at least 18 degrees to avoid health problems but I personally find that too cold if I'm not moving around much - I sometimes WFH and if I'm sat in one place in a succession of meetings it feels cold.

So we heat to 20 degrees. An older person is more likely to feel the cold as they tend to be more sedentary. I do find care homes and hospitals very overheated - made me feel ill on the maternity ward! Ultimately it's her choice though.

DrZaraCarmichael · 24/11/2024 15:26

I wasn't havng a go at you, @RoseyLentil - it was @Vax @Devilsmommy @Tessasays @Enterthedragonqueen who all said that you should just turn it down and she won't notice anyway. Which is clearly unreasonable!!

Ilikewinter · 24/11/2024 15:34

It's nice to have a post about elderly parents actually having heating on rather than all those where parents are refusing and sitting in the cold! Is there an issue with cost?, if not I'd be happy she's nice and toasty.

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/11/2024 15:37

Some people need it warmer. I’m one and my house is generally 23/24. My mums care home was always very warm, I assumed it was what the residents needed.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 24/11/2024 15:44

When I was a kid, my parents used to turn up the heating when my grandmother came over, because she felt the cold. When she left, they'd open all the windows (even on christmas day) and enjoy the fresh air.

Now, when my parents come over, we turn on the heating and sweat buckets, and my mother sits under a heated blanket in front of the roaring fire and complains that it's freezing. When they leave, we open all the windows and enjoy the fresh air.

We're staying with my sister at the moment. She turned the heating on the other evening because it was approaching freezing outside, and my kids both complained that it was too hot and changed into shortie pyjamas.

Age messes up your thermostat.

AInightingale · 24/11/2024 16:08

It is very warm - my mother's sheltered living place had the heat set at 23 c and that was the very dead of winter, though it was bloody freezing this week admittedly.

I'd just be upfront with your MIL that you are menopausal and suffering the heat, and go out for breaks to the back door, surely she'd understand.

Ponderingwindow · 24/11/2024 16:13

We used to dress for the tropics under our winter coats when going to visit the grandparents. Some people do get very cold when they get old.

she is an adult and it is her home. She gets to pick the temperature.

mitogoshigg · 24/11/2024 17:23

I'd be pretty uncomfortable at that temperature, that's tropical holiday weather rather than British winter clothes. Mine is 18 and that's plenty warm enough to sit in a t shirt
