Elderly parents

Dad always cold

My dad is 88, has heart failure and is always cold. My parents are worried about winter as he needs the house to be very warm all the time.
He already wears multiple layers including thermals, but I’m wondering if some kind of heated body warmer would be a good idea.
Im struggling to find something suitable as the items I’ve found all seem to indicate they’re for outdoor use.
Does anyone know of any useful products?

There's nothing to stop him wearing an out door item indoors. There's no law against it!

I gave my mum a heated body warmer to wear indoors; can’t remember what brand now! Found it on amazon. She was pleased, it keeps her core warm and is quite light. Also got her an electric heated throw to use on the sofa.

What about a fleece onesie?? Would that add an extra layer for warmth?? Or a heated blanket x

poppyzbrite4 · 15/09/2024 19:56

My mum is always cold. I bought her a slumber down heated fleece which she loves.

It's a common side effect of heart meds.

Layers, moving about as much as he can and yes those heated body warmers (amazing sell them I think) but maybe invest in a heated blanket for them. Or if the electric is a concern the sherpa fleece blankets are fab.

For bed, invest in a decent feather duvet. Dh feels the cold really badly and has never once complained since we swapped. In fact he regularly complains he is too hot!

If he’s not very mobile he will be cold. An oodie is a good idea and some fleece pyjama bottoms. My dm was always cold, we got her fleece lined leggings.

Elderly people are often cold . I got my uncle a heated throw . Wrapped him in it in his chair . Brillant and so cheap to run . Couple with thermal underwear and fleecy clothes . Don't forget the feet maybe fleecy lined slippers .

Thanks for your posts. I’m looking at heated body warmers on Amazon now. Too much choice; ranging from around £20- £140!
The reason I was hesitant about getting one for outdoor use is because I want something super light and comfortable; an item designed for outdoor use didn’t necessarily seem the best thing. If anyone has any recommendations for specific brands I’d be grateful.
I’ll ask about his pjs; fleece pjs are a great idea.
He's got an electric heated throw for the sofa.
Unfortunately he suffers from allergies so can’t have a feather duvet.

You cam get hypoallergenic ones,I am asthmatic and allergic to feathers normally nut the o e o got is fab.

As for the heated Gillette things, get a cheap one and see how it works for him before spending a bomb, he might not like it!

Merino wool vests are good

DF had a heated body warmer but it was years ago and can't remember which make he had.

Is he wearing slippers and socks, fingerless gloves and long johns?

Heated throw and heated blanket

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 21/09/2024 14:12

My mum became very cold after starting heart meds. She wears lots of layers, has a heated throw which makes a real difference when sitting, wears cashmere fingerless gloves in the house. She also has some hand warmers which you squeeze to activate which she puts in gloves outside, but also uses them inside if she feels like her hands are becoming cold. It helps with feeling warm all over to keep extremities warm. Plus she accepts that in winter her heating bills will be high. She lives in a large house but has thermostatic radiator valves on most radiators so can have the rooms she uses warm but rooms not used so often less warm , which helps not to waste the heating.

The fake fur heated blanket from Dreamland. It's expensive, but so unbelievably warm - i bought my dd the fleece version and it's nowhere near as cosy. I unplug mine and it's still really warm. Plugged in it is unbeatable.
