I am posting in “Elderly Parents” even though I know it is the wrong place, but I think there is a lot of knowledge here.
My wife and I are both 77.I am reasonably fit but my wife is not.She has no sense of balance and her GP and I think she had dementia (she is waiting for a proper dementia assessment).
She sometimes moves around our home using a Zimmer but is starting to ask me to help her more and more. I want to help but my neck and arms are sore from the strain.
Is there such a thing as a cheap wheelchair for use indoors? I’ve tried Google but no results. If I could get a wheelchair, it would be so much easier to take her to the toilet, to bed or wherever she wants in our flat.
We have a wheelchair for use outside, but I’d like something smaller and lighter for inside.

Lighter indoor wheelchairs are available, however, you need to be very careful as obviously you don't want to hurt your wife or yourself.
I would suggest you speak to your GP and/or Occupational Therapy. It may be time to have a care assessment via Social Services if only to set a base line.

That means getting her to agree. Buying a cheap lightweight wheelchair solves the problem without a long discussion.

It’s not particularly cheap but I purchased this one for getting my mother around the house when she didn’t feel up to using her rollator. Folds up small and is quite light for putting in the back of the car too.

Have a look at sites like this:

https://www.livewelltoday.co.uk/wheeled-mobility-travel/wheelchairs/c-27/c-144?VAT%20Relief_Range=0%20-%20499&SortBy=PriceLowHigh&PageSize=36&page=1

They provide all the measurements so you can check the width will work for your doorways / halls.

Thanks,
The cheapest at £69 would be perfect. I could not find any under £150 which is a lot for what we need.

@OldJohn just seen your update. That sounds very difficult, I'm sorry.

You need to contact Occupational Health through your GP. They will send an occupational therapist to assess your property.

If she is capable of using a Zimmer frame, you should not put her in a wheel chair just because she needs support to move because keeping mobile especially with onset dementia is essential. It affects everything including healthy bowel movements. Obviously if that is the only safe option that's the only safe option but you need her to be assessed properly.

The fact you can't manage her alone is not the same as meaning she needs a wheelchair. It maybe if you are not safe moving/handling her alone that she is at a point where she needs two people to move her. This may mean you need a carer as a second pair of hands or two carers.

Either way, speak to the GP asap. There is a lot of help out there including moving and support aids but you won't know if anything is suitable until she and your home have been assessed.
